Marseille is a city known for its beautiful beaches and ideal wind conditions for Wing Foil. Whether you are a beginner or an expert, you will find many spots to enjoy your favourite activity. Discover in this article the 7 best Wing Foil spots in Marseille and its surroundings.
La Point Rouge : Marseille's iconic Wing Foil spot
Have you ever seen a wingfoil spot accessible by public transport ? We have ! The mythical spot of La Pointe Rouge is located in the heart of Marseille, in the 8th district. You can get there by taking bus 19 or metro 2. The launch is usually on the right side of the beach of La Pointe Rouge or under the restaurant “La Riviera”.
The dominant wind on this spot is the mistral (North-West). It is also a very good spot with a West wind. When the conditions are favourable, there are waves to surf the swell and chop to jump. This spot is to be avoided by East wind and by North-East and South-East wind for beginners. The swell and offshore wind may take you out to sea.
Wing foil spot north of Marseille : Anse de Tamaris
This superb spot with south-west and south-east winds will take you on a journey. Whether you are a beginner or a more experienced sailor, it is a real pleasure to sail on these crystal clear waters. If the wind drops, you can always try your hand at dockstarting thanks to the four pontoons in the harbour, which is great fun! Be careful though, this idyllic spot is very popular in the summer.
L'Anse de Bonnieu : a wingfoil spot for everyone
Whether you’re an experienced rider or not, this spot offers great conditions for all riders. The northwest facing bay offers a ton of possibilities, with winds from northwest to south. Other directions are not recommended, especially for beginners as these are offshore winds. For the more experienced who like to foil in the waves, a great swell will form if waves are forecast and the wind is from the SE. Beware, in some places in the bay, the depth can become very low. Be preventive and protect your foil by being careful not to scrape the bottom of the water.
Carro : the great Wing Foil spot for the experienced
Located less than half an hour from Marseille, the spot of Carro is a small paradise that will delight foil lovers. It is located west of the small Provencal village of Carro. It is above all an ideal wave spot with a north-west wind. It is also possible to sail there with a West, South-West and South-East wind. This great wave spot is rather reserved for experienced surfers because, if it offers magnificent sailing conditions, the wind can turn quickly and the launching is sometimes difficult. Last but not least, in order to avoid any bad surprises, we advise you to wear booties to surf.
La Ciotat : wingfoil in one of the most beautiful bays in the world
The Bay of La Ciotat, voted the most beautiful bay in the world in 2019, is an incredible Wingfoil spot. It is less than an hour’s drive from Marseille and offers great sessions thanks to a sandy bottom that makes the water turquoise. Launching from the beach is easy, and the winds are steady. The south-west wind is the best direction. You can also enjoy this spot with a North, Northwest or Southeast wind if you like waves. The water is shallow, you have to walk a little to make sure you have enough bottom. The more adventurous can go further out to enjoy the swell and a great view of the coast. The only problem is that during the summer months it can be difficult to find a parking space.
La Coudoulière : the best wave spot in the region
This spot is a real treat for wave lovers ! It is one of the best spots in the area, with a big swell that offers great conditions for wave riding. It’s great in a NW wind, the waves that roll off the cliff are ideal for waveriding and jumping. In a SW wind the waves are smaller and allow for freestyle sessions. However, this spot is best suited to experienced riders. The launch is easy, it is done on the beach of Coudoulière, after the port. Don’t forget to watch out for the seawall and rocks in case of heavy conditions to avoid injury or damage to your equipment.

L'Almanarre : the spot that works in all weathers
The spot in the bay of Almanarre, near Marseille, is very popular with Wing Foil, Kite surf and Windsurfers. With a West to North-West wind, the waves take over the bay and offer magnificent freeride sessions, jumps or simply to glide from wave to wave. The East wind turns the spot into a mirror and offers perfect conditions for speed runs. Be careful, the East wind is completely offshore, you have to know how to ride upwind. Launching is easy, but in summer specific areas are designated.
