Dive into a new dimension of surfing with surf foil. An experience that transcends the limits of traditional surfing. You don’t need to have the perfect wave anymore, only a 50cm swell will give you unparalleled sensations. The exhausting paddle after the wave, pumping and reconnecting the waves one after the other.

Imagine surfing without ever stopping flying. Surf foil or towed foil was born in 2005 with riders like Paolo Rista surfing jaws in foil or Laird Hamilton. This practice was highlighted in the mid-2015s by Kai Lenny and many other riders. Subsequently, this discipline will be propelled to all continents and surfers from all over the world have taken it up.

The surf foil allows you to surf in all conditions, whether it is the short surf wave or the long wave of the offshore downwind. Where usually we wouldn’t even get in the water, the surf foil allows us to save the session. Where often in surfing we only catch 5-6 waves in two hours in the water, the surf foil will allow us to chain waves without stopping thanks to the force of the pumping.

To start foil surfing, it is recommended to have a good level in surfing (no need to be an expert), it will allow you to better understand the take-off. A good level in another foil mount will also allow you to surf foil but then practice take-off. For more information on surf foiling, read our article on the surf foil.

For the board, you don’t need a high-volume board, you have to opt for a short board and above all easy to paddle.

To start you can go for the Fast Flyer 4’6, it is a board made in France and which will allow you to start easily. With a volume of 38l, it will bring you ease.

For the Expert Scouts, go for the boards between the 4’2 and the 5’0 SUPERFLY. This top-of-the-range material will bring ease of paddling and rigidity and lightness. They will be perfect for surf foiling.

For foiling, beginners will rather opt for a foil such as the classic Sfoil 1500, or the 1250 control or the 1190L offering ease and comfort to allow you to progress quickly.

For more advanced riders, they can opt for the 1190S or 1190W which will offer super pumping efficiency for the latter and a speed allowing you to be more radical on the wave.

Whether it’s the carbon foil or an aluminum foil, both options will work just fine. However, with a carbon foil, the performance will be unbridled. This will bring lightness, and rigidity.

FAQ

Surfing foil is a practice of board sports that consists of adding a hydrofoil to a surfboard. Surf foil is becoming more and more popular because it allows you to surf swell trains of less than 50cm and does not need breaking waves to offer extraordinary gliding sensations. It is also possible to take several waves in a row thanks to pumping, without stopping.

Choosing the right Surfoil equipment is essential. For boarding, if you are just starting out, opt for a board such as the 4’6 fast flyer or the 4’2 to 5’0 superfly to have an easy board to paddle. Don’t hesitate to take a board with a little volume such as the superfly 4’8 or 5’0, which will offer you much more comfort when paddling and when taking off.

As far as the foil is concerned, it is recommended in surf foil to have a foil with a surface area close to 1200 cm2. You can start with a 1500, it will bring you stability and ease. Then as you level up. You will be able to go down to the size of the foil. This will bring speed and maneuverability. However, it is necessary to master the technique of foil pumping. You can choose between the 1250, 950 from the control range or the HA range with the 1190 S or L or W. At the mast level, if you are surfing a shorebreak wave, a short 70cm type mast will be more recommended. For wide swells, longer masts will be easier on a daily basis but will require more technique

To start in surf foil, equip yourself with a board in the 40L, 50L range as well as a foil such as the 1250 Control or the classic 1500 in order to have an easy and reactive foil offering maximum control on the wave. It is recommended to have a good level of surfing to facilitate the take-off stage. If you have never foiled before, start by making your first flights if you can in wakefoil to discover the first sensations or in dockstart to learn the pumping technique. Being comfortable in foiling will be your key to success in surf foiling. Choose an easy spot to start with few people around. Ideally, you need to find a wave that breaks and reforms. Start in the foam, get on the board and start flying. Then as I went along, I started to turn and generate speed through the turn. Finally, in a third step, learn how to pump.

We guide you to choose the right surf foil.

The working principle of a surf foil is based on fluid dynamics. The front wing is pulled upwards as it moves forward, because the water molecules that pass over the upper surface of the front wing accelerate to catch up with the water molecules passed over the lower surface (which is shorter because it is flat). The acceleration of the molecules on the upper part of the wing creates a depression and the slowing down of those on the lower part creates overpressure. The consequence is an upward suction effect. The higher the speed of the foil, the more the foil is “pulled” upwards (at the same profile and angle).
