In this article, we’ll explore the essential criteria to consider when selecting a quality paddle. Whether you’re an experienced stand-up paddle enthusiast or a curious novice, it’s crucial to choose an inflatable stand-up paddle that meets your needs and delivers optimum performance on the water. Let’s take a closer look at the various important points to consider.

Criteria for selecting a quality paddle

There are many essential criteria for choosing the right inflatable paddle. First, take an overall view, check that the paddle appears to be of good overall quality, with no manufacturing defects or even deformations. Next, we’ll take a look at the most important points to bear in mind.

Manufacturing materials

Inflatable paddles are made from PVC, a petroleum derivative with a number of qualities. The first, and most important in our case, is that PVC is 100% airtight, allowing for an inflatable structure.

But pvc is a material that can, in certain situations, prove to be rather fragile, which is why thethickness of the different layers is extremely important, because in addition to rigidity, they will give the solidity of a SUP.

For example, many SUP products on the market are built with 0.4 or 0.5 mm layers, whereas we have decided to build our paddles with 0.7 mm PVC in the interests of product durability.

Paddle construction

The thickness of the layers is extremely important, as we’ve discussed, but the construction and distribution of the thicknesses and welds are also important in the quest for a good quality paddle.

For example, we’ve added three layers of 0.7 mm on the rails, the most sensitive part of the paddle, where you’ll be paddling and also where you’ll be putting the SUP. The three layers on the sides also increase the paddle’s rigidity and therefore its efficiency.

Handling and comfort

A stand-up paddle is a slippery item, so it needs to have as little drag as possible to make your rides a success without being excessively tiring.

To achieve this, the paddle needs to be stiff, light and well-built. The length-to-width ratio will largely determine your paddle’s ability to glide. A longer, narrower SUP will slide more but be less maneuverable, while a wider, shorter paddle will be more maneuverable but less slippery.

Accessories and additional features

Finally, to perfect your choice of paddle, and estimate the quality of what you have in front of you, linger over the small details that make a top-of-the-range product such as..:

  • the quality of the paddle’s accessories (bungee cords, D-rings, handles, storage compartments, etc.)
  • The quality and presence of external components such as the pump, repair kit, leash and carry bag.

In short, you’re all set to go bargain-hunting and avoid the pitfalls. Bear in mind that paddles are fragile items that need to be treated with the utmost care.

All you have to do is enjoy your stand-up paddle season.
