How do I transport a paddle?

You love your paddle, but every move becomes a perilous adventure? Between the inflatable paddle board that has to fit in the trunk, the straps that get tangled, and the paddle that’s easy to forget, it’s time to simplify your transport routine. Whether you’re using a roof rack, a carry bag or a trailer, there are tips for every situation. With the right accessories, transporting your SUP, whether rigid or inflatable, becomes quick and convenient. Avoid scratches, secure your equipment and save time: follow our tips for optimized transport and set off on your adventure without a care in the world.

Why is it important to transport a paddle correctly?

To enjoy your paddle for a long time, you need to protect it. And that means transporting it properly to :

  • Avoid damage: a poorly strapped paddle means a board that’s likely to take a beating during transport. Scratches, dents, even cracks, or breakage if the board flies off the roof. All of which can spoil your next session.
  • Extend its lifespan: by taking care of your paddle during transport, you can ensure its longevity. A paddle in good condition will be with you for many years to come.
  • Ensuring your safety: a loose paddle on your car is a danger to you and other road users.

Transporting your paddle on foot or by bike

Transporting your paddle on your bike or on foot requires a little organization and, above all, the right accessories. In all cases, comfort and safety are paramount. Here are our tips for transporting your paddle in the best possible way.

Using paddle carrying straps

Carrying straps are practical accessories for transporting your rigid or inflatable paddle. They fit all board sizes and distribute the weight more evenly over the shoulders. With straps, you can carry your paddle effortlessly and safely. There are different strap models, with or without padding, so you can choose the one that best suits your needs and comfort.

Using a cart to transport a paddle

If you’d rather avoid carrying your paddle, especially over long distances, a transport cart is the ideal solution. Specially designed for transporting paddles, these carts feature all-terrain wheels that make them easy to move around on different types of surface, such as sand or rocky paths. A lightweight cart lets you transport your paddle effortlessly, whether on foot or by pulling the paddle cart behind your bike.

Carrying an inflatable paddle at arm’s length

If you have an inflatable paddle, carrying it at arm’s length is often the simplest solution for short distances. Lightweight and easy to handle, an inflatable paddle can easily be folded up and stowed away in your storage bag. This bag, usually supplied with the board, makes transport quick and convenient, ideal for moving easily to the beach or lakeside. Beware, however, of the risk of fatigue and back pain. It’s important to keep a firm grip on the board’s carrying handle and keep your back straight.

Transporting your paddle by car

Transporting your paddle by car is often the most practical solution, especially over long distances. But as with walking or cycling, you need to be well equipped.

Essential equipment: straps, roof racks and covers

To transport a paddle on the roof of your car, you’ll need some essential equipment:

  • Roof bars are the basis for securing the board. Make sure they are compatible with your vehicle and are properly installed.
  • Add sturdy straps to secure it to the roof bars, to prevent it from moving during the journey. Choose strong, elastic straps for optimum support.
  • A protective cover is ideal for preventing scratches or minor impacts to your board, especially on long journeys or in bad weather.

Steps for securing the paddle on the car roof

  1. Prepare your board: remove all paddle accessories (pump, paddle, leash) and store them in the boot of your car.
  2. Install the roof bars: follow the manufacturer’s instructions for installing the roof bars on your vehicle. Make sure they are tight.
  3. Place your paddle on the roof bars: lay your paddle flat on the roof bars, lengthwise along your car.
  4. Secure the straps: pass the straps around your board and the roof bars. Tighten them sufficiently to hold your board in place, without distorting it. Make sure the straps are not in direct contact with the surface of your board, to avoid scratches.
  5. Put on the protective cover: wrap your board in the protective cover and check that all fastenings are securely closed.

Mistakes to avoid to protect your paddle and your vehicle

To protect both your paddle and your car:

  • Never overload the roof bars, and observe the maximum load specified by the manufacturer.
  • Avoid overtightening the carrying strap. This could damage your board.
  • Don’t forget to check the straps regularly during the journey.
  • Don’t leave your paddle on the roof of your car overnight or in bad weather.
  • Don’t forget to remove the roof racks and protective cover once you’ve reached your destination.
  • Make sure the board doesn’t protrude too far to the front or rear of the car to avoid accidents or fines.

How do you transport your SUP without a roof rack?

Don’t panic if you don’t have a roof rack! There are several alternatives for transporting your SUP, even without this equipment. Of course, these solutions are not as practical as having roof racks, but they can help out in certain situations.

  • Interior carrying straps: if your vehicle is large enough, you can carry your SUP inside. By folding down the rear seats, place the board flat and use a carrying strap or ropes to secure it and prevent it from moving during the journey. This is a simple and effective solution, especially for inflatable paddles, which take up less space when deflated.
  • Sunroof : if your vehicle is equipped with a sufficiently large sunroof, you can also try to get your SUP through it. Be careful, however, not to damage either your board or your vehicle.
  • Inflatable racks: these inflate and attach to the roof of the car, creating a soft, stable base for your paddle. They are easy to install and remove, perfect for people who don’t transport their SUP frequently.
  • Trailer: if you have a trailer, you can safely transport your SUP on it. Secure your board with straps to prevent it from moving during the journey.

Carrying your paddle on public transport

You can also transport your paddle by bus, train or metro. The most practical way is to opt for an inflatable paddle. Once deflated, it takes up much less space and can easily be slipped into a backpack or sports bag. Not only does this simplify your travels, but you also avoid disturbing other passengers with a large board.

Some models of rigid paddles can be folded in half, or even in thirds. This makes them much easier to transport on public transport.

Another little tip: traveling outside rush hour is often easier to avoid crowds and have more space for your equipment.
