Wingfoiling is one of the new watersports, and the number of practitioners continues to grow, with some even abandoning their preferred sport. Are you wondering why? We'll give you 5 good reasons to practice Wing Foiling! If you're not familiar with this sport, Wing Foil involves standing on a board with a foil, holding a wing in your hands. The foil resembles an underwater airplane that, thanks to the speed generated, creates lift. The Wing is similar to a kite, used to gain speed.
Wing foiling offers many advantages, both on land and at sea. This new watersport provides unique gliding sensations with far fewer constraints than Kitesurfing or Windsurfing.
5 good reasons to practice Wing Foil
Reason 1: Simplicity and Ease of Use
When you start Winging after having practiced Kitesurfing or Windsurfing, everything becomes simpler! For one, the equipment is truly minimalist. You just need to inflate your Wing, and set up your foil. If you opt for an inflatable board such as the SROKA Air, you can store everything in a single bag! Perfect for transporting and preparing your gear anywhere. The gear is lightweight, and there's no need for a large sail, or straps, harnesses... In less than 10 minutes, all your equipment is ready to go on the water. So if you have an hour at lunchtime, you can ride for 45 minutes.
Then, launching is easy; depending on the spot, you can start directly from the beach or a slipway. Returning is just as simple: if the wind drops, with the sufficient volume of the boards, you'll manage to get back by riding (unlike Kiting where you swim back). If the wind picks up, it's also easy to return safely, with much less risk than in Kitesurfing.
Moreover, WingFoil offers very versatile equipment and thus the possibility to discover other facets of foil sports (SUPFoil, WakeFoil, WindFoil, KiteFoil, SurfFoil...).
Reason 2: No need for strong wind and wave conditions
One of the great advantages of this watersport is that it's possible to ride even in light winds. You can take off from 7 to 8 knots. This is also ideal for beginners to get started with Winging. There's no need for big wave conditions; in Wingfoiling, it's possible to surf soft, unbroken waves. In addition to optimizing for light conditions, this offers a wide choice of spots and opportunities to practice.
Some places lack waves, for example, the south of France or Lake Geneva in Switzerland. However, with a little wind, chop builds up, allowing you to surf wind swells. Consequently, there's no need to be in Hawaii in majestic conditions; you just need a little wind to have a blast. Close your eyes and imagine yourself skiing on 1 meter of powder snow... that's the sensation WingFoil will give you.
Reason 3: Accessible to all levels
WingFoil doesn't require great physical condition beforehand. This is what makes this practice accessible to everyone, regardless of skill level, physique, or age. Indeed, the whole family can get into it, which will make your outings on the water even more fun! From 7 to 77 years old, everyone can practice at their own pace. It's not a traumatic sport; the speeds are not those of KiteFoil or WindFoil, so it's very reassuring. It's a sport where it's easy to progress: any good watersports enthusiast will start foiling in less than 3 hours.
And for all this, you don't need a lot of gear: a simple Wing pack quiver (a wing, a foil, and a board) with a very wide wind range will allow you to really have fun whatever your level.
Moreover, WingFoil moves away from the sometimes vain mentalities of certain sports. Here, you detach yourself from the shore and the world to refocus on your personal practice. In Wing, you have fun for yourself with friends, no need to be 50 meters from the shore to impress the gallery.
After reading our article "How to start Wing Foiling," you'll understand that it's the easiest way to learn Foiling, and above all, to have a blast on the water, compared to other watersports. Depending on the equipment chosen, learning can be relatively fast. The main thing is to practice and be patient.
Reason 4: Gliding sensations come very quickly
Starting Winging will allow you to discover new gliding sensations, completely different from Kitesurfing or Windsurfing. Getting started is almost immediate. So you can progress quickly, and soon take off or even surf swells or waves. Flying silently on the water provides a true feeling of freedom.
Among the different ways to practice, it is possible to:
- cruise safely, even if the wind is light, thanks to the board's volume. You'll be able to fly very early and thus cover quite a distance without too much effort;
- do long downwinds, riding downwind and surfing wave trains;
- practice freestyle with adapted equipment that allows for Wing tricks;
- compete with friends on runs or during cruises;
- discover new spots to ride that are not at all exploited by other sports. Practicing Wing is a way to disassociate yourself from surf spots, whose number of practitioners continues to grow, or even to ride when Kiting is prohibited during the summer.
Reason 5: A complete sport activity
Wingfoiling will work your back and leg muscles, especially through pumping with your legs or arms on the Wing to move forward. You really feel like you're working all the muscles in your body. It's also an interesting practice for cardio; you work on endurance and much less on explosiveness. It's a very accessible sport for everyone, and particularly suitable for women. Furthermore, the physical demands are lower than in other watersports, making recovery easier.
Some people say that foiling can be dangerous. By following certain safety rules, we are convinced that it is one of the least dangerous watersports with the fewest major trauma risks. Generally, the chances of collisions with Wing Foil equipment are greatly reduced, and when they do occur, they are less painful than in windsurfing. All of this explains the success of Wing Foil.
