In this article, we'll explore the essential criteria to consider when selecting a quality paddleboard. Whether you're an experienced stand-up paddleboard enthusiast or a curious beginner, it's crucial to choose an inflatable stand-up paddleboard that meets your needs and offers optimal performance on the water. Let's take a closer look at the various important points to consider.
Criteria for selecting a quality paddleboard
There are many essential criteria for choosing the right inflatable paddleboard. First, take an overall look and check that the board appears to be of good quality overall, with no manufacturing defects or deformations. Then, we'll discuss the various important points to consider.
Manufacturing materials
Inflatable paddleboards are made of PVC, a petroleum derivative with various qualities. The first, and most important in our case, is that PVC is 100% airtight , which allows for an inflatable structure.
But PVC is a material that can, in certain situations, prove to be rather fragile, which is why the thickness of the different layers is extremely important because in addition to rigidity, they will give the solidity of a SUP.
For example, many SUPs on the market are constructed with 0.4 or 0.5 mm layers, whereas, with a view to the durability of our products, we have decided to construct our paddles with 0.7 mm PVC.
The construction of the paddle
The thickness of the layers is extremely important, as we have discussed, but the construction and distribution of thicknesses and welds are also important in the quest for a good quality paddleboard
For example, we use three layers of 0.7 mm material on the rails, which is the most sensitive part of the paddleboard, where you'll be paddling and also where you'll be resting the SUP. The three layers on the sides also increase the paddleboard's rigidity and therefore its efficiency.
Maneuverability and comfort
A stand-up paddleboard is a gliding object; it must have as little drag as possible to make your outings a success without being excessively tiring.
For this, the paddleboard must be rigid, lightweight, and well-constructed . The length-to-width ratio will largely determine your paddleboard's glide. A longer, narrower SUP will glide more but will be less maneuverable, while a wider, shorter paddleboard will be more maneuverable but less glideable.
Accessories and additional features
Finally, to perfect your choice of paddleboard, and to assess the quality of what you see before you, pay attention to the small details that make a product high-end, such as:
- the quality of the accessories on the paddleboard (bungee cord, "D" ring, handles, storage…)
- The quality and presence of external elements such as the pump, repair kit, leash or carrying bag.
In short, you're now equipped to hunt for bargains while avoiding pitfalls. Keep in mind that paddleboards are fragile items that must be handled with the utmost care.
All you have to do now is enjoy your stand-up paddle season.
