    Wingfoil destination in Leucate

The reputation of the “wind city” is well established; having hosted the Mondial du Vent (World Wind Festival) for over 20 years, Leucate is an ideal destination for wing foiling : it's the place to be for wind and board sports in general. Located in the corridors where the Tramontane wind picks up, the region enjoys over 300 days of wind annually. This is complemented by a significant number of shops for stocking up on equipment or getting routine repairs done.

What are the best spots for wingfoiling in Leucate?

    1. The coussoules (the franqui)

The first spot on our list is Les Coussoules. Home to the legendary Mondial du Vent (World Windsurfing Championships) and many other competitions, it's above all the spot where the wind is always strongest thanks to its Venturi effect. The wind is channeled there by the hinterland and Cap Leucate, on which the village of La Franqui clings. And what's more, the area is incredibly beautiful!

Thus the wind enters from the North-West (tramontane) or South/South-East depending on the thermal orientations in summer.

    Sea, sand, sun

Imagine a campsite for riders… Well, there you have it! Leucate is the perfect destination for a wingfoil holiday. The spot is right outside your mobile home, and there are facilities for cleaning and drying your gear at the foot of the beach. The same goes for storage. But above all, there's a fantastic atmosphere with only windsurfers and wingfoilers around you. The spot works in all directions, since it's open water. (The prevailing wind will be northwesterly with a tramontane and southeasterly with a marlin.)

    The Goulet (Leucate lagoon)

In this region, many spots are located on ponds. Unfortunately, the experience will depend on the amount of algae at the time of your visit, but one of the best-known spots remains Le Goulet, famous for its club, the Wesh Center Crew, run by Julien Taboulet, a former windsurfing champion. The place is clearly a little slice of paradise, with the option to eat on-site, take a shower, and even access a skate ramp when the wind drops.

The ideal wind is the tramontane, of course, the Goulet is among the spots where the wind is strongest. On the other hand, with a marin (sea wind) the spot is sheltered from the wind by Cap Leucate.

    The oyster park

The Leucate Oyster Park, affectionately nicknamed "the park," is an iconic spot widely recognized by windsurfing enthusiasts. It's THE safe spot par excellence, offering ideal conditions for windsurfers of all levels, from beginners to experienced sailors. The park is renowned for its shallow waters, making it perfect for beginners, especially when using short masts.

Located in the beautiful Leucate region, the park attracts riders seeking a unique experience. Thanks to the shallow water, beginners can progress without fear of having to walk back after a mishap or during their first attempts.

Whether you're a seasoned enthusiast or a passionate beginner, the Leucate Oyster Park remains a magical place where communion with nature and the wind creates an unforgettable experience. Come and experience wing foiling at the "parka" and discover the joys of this sport in an exceptional setting.

    What activities?

While Leucate is an ideal destination for progressing in wingfoiling, its beautiful surroundings offer plenty of other activities to enjoy. Whether it's wingfoiling on windy days or even stand-up paddleboarding when the conditions calm down, there's something for everyone. Dockstarts are also possible, provided you can find a pontoon. Otherwise, you'll have to learn the beach start on a foil.

Furthermore, take advantage of the inland area to hike in the mountains and enjoy the beautiful natural surroundings. If the wind isn't cooperating, there's a cable ski lift for wakeboarding and wake foiling.

If you'd like to do some dockstart, take a little trip to Barcarès; in addition to a community of riders who love dockstart, you'll surely find pontoons there.

What equipment is needed for wing foiling in Leucate?

The tramontane is a very strong and irregular land wind. Consequently, it will push you to your limits if you are not accustomed to it. Therefore, to be as comfortable as possible in these conditions, two scenarios are possible:

    1. First, you're an experienced rider . In that case, bring as much equipment as possible (that's always the rule regardless of the spot), especially the smaller gear, whether it's boards or foils. To give you an idea, in Leucate, the SROKA team would take, for an 85kg rider with a good skill level: a Superfly 4'6 or 4'8 , wingfoil wings in 3, 4, and 5m², and an Elite 14mm foil with its carbon fuselage, a 180cm² stabilizer, and three front wings to adapt to all eventualities. Bring a 1350 L HA for calm days and possibly the dockstart if you're proficient in that discipline, and the 950 S HA , nicknamed the "Swiss Army knife," which is enjoyable in all weather conditions. Finally, to finish, our little 670 S HA to go faster than the others!
    2. In the second scenario, you're progressing . In this situation, it's essential to use equipment you're familiar with. The Tramontane wind is strong and quite unstable, so you don't want to be caught off guard. A 1250 Control front wing will provide comfort and ease of use in all conditions. An 820 Control will give you ease in very strong winds. Finally, if you're riding at sea, the wind will be offshore, all the more reason to stay safe. So, head out to sea with equipment suited to your skill level and the conditions. Otherwise, we recommend riding on lakes and ponds.

Where can I take lessons? Where can I rent equipment?

The area is full of schools and shops that can rent equipment. If we had to recommend just one, you could go to the Cap Leucate sailing club, which, in addition to being very welcoming, is an association full of passionate people!

For equipment rental, we recommend Directwind Leucate. They have a friendly and dynamic team who will provide you with recent and well-maintained equipment.

    Advice from the SROKA team!

The area around Leucate is very popular, beware of equipment thefts which can unfortunately still happen although less frequent at present.

No matter the trip, SROKA gear will adapt to all wind conditions. Therefore, all you have to do is ENJOY!
