Sardinia, a magnificent island ideal for wing foiling

Sardinia, a jewel of the Mediterranean, offers an idyllic setting for wing foil enthusiasts. A cross between windsurfing and kitesurfing, this revolutionary sport allows you to glide above the water using an inflatable wing and a foil board. Even in light winds, you can explore the turquoise sea and enjoy easily transportable equipment. Wing foiling is the art of flying above the waves, a unique experience amidst breathtaking scenery. Sardinia is a dream destination for wing foiling .

Popular Wing Foil spots in Sardinia

Since Sardinia is an island, every nook and cranny, every stretch of beach can become a spot for wing foiling . So we're going to tell you about the island's main spots.

    1. The island of Sant'Antioco

The island of Sant'Antioco, located in southwestern Sardinia, is one of the windiest spots in the entire Mediterranean. Thanks to its geographical position, it benefits from Mistral and Scirocco winds almost year-round. It's a strategic location for watersports enthusiasts, particularly those who enjoy windsurfing, kitesurfing, and wing foiling. The Sant'Antioco center, located 2 km from the town center and 8 km from Calasetta, offers courses for both beginners and advanced riders.

The spot offers shallow, flat waters and a constant wind, ideal for learning to wingfoil.

You will easily find typical guesthouses there that will allow you to live a unique experience between sea, sun and wingfoil.

    2. The Strait of Bonifacio

The Strait of Bonifacio, located in southern Corsica and northern Sardinia, is a very popular wingfoil spot. The wind is very often present in an idyllic setting.

Ideal conditions: The westerly wind that funnels through the Strait of Bonifacio creates exceptional sailing conditions for wing foiling. The shallow waters and white sand beaches make it a perfect spot for practicing wing foiling.

The simplest solution to learn wing foiling is to take a boat cruise on a catamaran and discover the multitude of islands and beaches on a Wing cruise with Foil Explore Cruising, for example.

    3. Punta Trettu

Punta Trettu, located in the southwest of Sardinia, overlooks the lagoon of the Gulf of Palmas. This region is renowned for its windy and sunny climate year-round. Historically, it has always been a place for fishing. However, over the last ten years, it has become famous for wing foiling, a revolutionary discipline halfway between windsurfing and kitesurfing. Wing foiling redefines gravity with its endless glides, allowing riders to sail in very light wind conditions. The essence of the sport lies in a wing attached to the wrist, without a bar or lines, and a board equipped with a large fin (foil). In Punta Trettu, thanks to its consistent and steady winds, you will have the opportunity to learn wing foiling safely, with equipment specifically designed to facilitate learning.

    4. Porto Botte

Porto Botte, located between the municipalities of San Giovanni Sergiu and Giba, in the southwest region of Sardinia. This site offers two distinct kitesurfing spots:

Il Fortino: Continuing to the right once you reach the sea, you'll discover this spot where the water is flat and deep. A local kite school runs this area, offering a well-equipped kite center and efficient rescue services should the need arise.

The other side of Porto Botte: Continuing to the left, you will reach the other part of Porto Botte. Here, the water is a little choppier and shallower, with a launching channel.

The Porto Botte kitesurfing spot is highly regarded for its flat water and strong winds, making it an excellent place to learn kitesurfing and improve your freestyle skills. The two spots inside the bay can safely accommodate a large number of kitesurfers.

The wind blows year-round, increasing in intensity thanks to thermal winds (from May to October) and the Venturi effect produced by the morphology of this stretch of coastline. In particular, the northwest wind, when accompanied by sunshine or little cloud cover, blows 5 to 10 knots stronger than expected.

What equipment should I bring with me to go Wing Foiling in Sardinia?

Here is the wing foil equipment we recommend:

    • The north-westerly wind (Mistral) which predominates in Sardinia, blows strongly and directly into the Gulf of Palmas, becoming increasingly intense due to the thermal wind and the "Venturi effect".
    • The south-east wind (Scirocco) coming from the opposite direction is somewhat gusty and lateral.
    • The west wind (Ponente) and the southwest wind (Libeccio) blow well from spring to autumn if the sky is not too cloudy.
    • The north wind (tramontane) often blows strongly and cold in the bay throughout the winter season (even at over 50 knots).

    The size of the wings

The wind in Sardinia can be very strong, so don't forget smaller wing sizes for wing foiling in all conditions. A 5m² or 3.4m² wing will allow you to ride in any conditions.

    The wing foil board?

If you're travelling by plane, an inflatable wing foil board will allow you to easily take it without the risk of breaking your board during the flight. It will fit easily in the trunk of your car.

The inflatable option is really a good opportunity for short family stays.

    Don't forget

Remember to bring a good sunscreen with a high SPF, as sunburn can happen quickly in the wind. In Sardinia during the summer months, the water is relatively warm, so theoretically a rash guard might be sufficient, but given the potentially strong winds, a shorty wetsuit is recommended for wing foiling.

Sardinia is renowned for its excellent winds, but also for its rich culture, history and picturesque landscapes! On a windless day (which is rare), or if you don't practice water sports, take the opportunity to explore the city, visit historical sites that trace the island's history, or enjoy delicious Italian dishes before taking advantage of the excellent temperatures on the beach.
