Sardinia, a magnificent island ideal for wing foiling
Sardinia, a jewel of the Mediterranean, offers an idyllic setting for wing foil enthusiasts. Combining windsurfing and kitesurfing, this revolutionary discipline allows riders to glide over the water thanks to an inflatable wing and a foil board. Even in light wind, you can explore the turquoise sea and enjoy easy-to-transport equipment. Wing foiling is the art of flying above the waves, a unique experience amidst sumptuous landscapes. Sardinia is a dream destination for Wing foiling.
Popular Wing Foil Spots in Sardinia
As Sardinia is an island, every corner, every stretch of beach can become a spot for wing foiling. So, we're going to tell you about the main spots on the island.
1. Sant'Antioco Island
Sant'Antioco Island, located in southwestern Sardinia, is one of the windiest places in the entire Mediterranean. Thanks to its geographical position, it benefits from Mistral and Scirocco winds almost all year round. It is a strategic location for watersports enthusiasts such as windsurfing, kitesurfing, and wingfoiling. There is the Sant'Antioco center, located 2 km from the center of Sant'Antioco and 8 km from Calasetta. It offers courses for beginners and advanced riders.
The spot offers shallow, flat water and consistent wind, ideal for learning wingfoiling.
You can easily find typical guesthouses there, allowing you to have a unique experience combining sea, sun, and wingfoiling.
2. The Strait of Bonifacio
The Strait of Bonifacio, located in Southern Corsica and northern Sardinia, is a very renowned wingfoil spot. The wind is very often present in an idyllic setting.
Ideal conditions: The west wind that rushes into the Strait of Bonifacio creates exceptional sailing conditions for wingfoiling. The shallow waters and white sandy beaches make it a perfect place to practice Wing foiling.
The simplest solution for learning wing foiling is to take a boat cruise on a catamaran and discover the multitude of islands and beaches on a Wing cruise with Foil explore Cruising, for example.
3. Punta Trettu
Punta Trettu, located in the southwestern part of Sardinia, overlooks the Gulf of Palmas lagoon. This region is known for its windy and sunny climate throughout the year. Historically, it has always been a place for fishing activities. However, over the last ten years, it has become famous for wing foiling, a revolutionary discipline halfway between windsurfing and kitesurfing. Wing foiling redefines gravity with its endless glides, allowing riders to navigate in very light wind scenarios. The essence of the sport lies in a wing attached to the wrist, without a bar or lines, and a board equipped with a large fin (foil). At Punta Trettu, thanks to its constant and strong winds, you will have the opportunity to learn wing foiling safely, with materials specially designed to facilitate learning.
4. Porto Botte
Porto Botte, located between the municipalities of San Giovanni Sergiu and Giba, in the southwestern region of Sardinia. This site offers two distinct kite spots:
Il Fortino: Continuing to the right once you reach the sea, you will discover this spot where the water is flat and deep. A local kite school manages this place, offering a well-equipped kite center and an efficient rescue service if needed.
The other side of Porto Botte: Continuing to the left, you will access the other part of Porto Botte. Here, the water is a little rougher and shallower, with a launch corridor.
The Porto Botte kite spot is highly appreciated for its flat water and strong wind characteristics, making it an excellent place to learn kitesurfing and improve freestyle. Both spots within the bay can accommodate a large number of kiters safely.
The wind blows all year round, increasing in intensity due to thermal wind (from May to October) and the Venturi effect produced by the morphology of this stretch of coastline. In particular, the North-West wind, associated with sun or little cloudiness, blows 5 to 10 knots stronger than expected.
What equipment to bring for Wing Foiling in Sardinia?
Here is the wing foil equipment we recommend:
- The north-west wind (Mistral), which predominates in Sardinia, blows strongly and directly into the Gulf of Palmas, becoming increasingly intense due to the thermal wind and the "Venturi effect".
- The south-east wind (Scirocco), coming from the opposite direction, is a bit gusty and side-onshore.
- The west wind (Ponente) and the south-west wind (Libeccio) blow well from spring to autumn if the sky is not too cloudy.
- The north wind (Tramontane) often blows strong and cold in the bay throughout the winter season (even over 50 knots).
Wing sizes?
The wind in Sardinia can be very strong, so don't forget small wing foil wing sizes to ensure you can ride in all conditions. A 5 m2 and 3.4 m2 will allow you to ride no matter the conditions.
Wing foil board?
If you're traveling by plane, an inflatable wing foil board will easily allow you to bring it without the risk of breaking your board during the trip. It will fit easily in the trunk of your car.
The inflatable option is really a good opportunity for short family stays.
Don't forget
Remember to bring good sunscreen with a high UV index because with the wind, sunburn can happen quickly. In Sardinia during the summer, the water is relatively warm, so theoretically a lycra might be enough, but with potentially strong wind, a shorty might be recommended for wing foiling.
Sardinia is renowned for its quality winds, but also for its rich culture, history, and picturesque landscapes! On a windless day (which is rare), or if you don't practice watersports, take the opportunity to explore the city, visit historical sites that trace the island's history, or enjoy delicious Italian dishes before basking in the excellent beach temperatures.
