Stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) needs no introduction; it's a water sport that allows you to move around on the water using a board and paddle. It allows you to practice various disciplines and is suitable for many people due to its ease of use and its ability to quickly escape the crowds while remaining close to nature.
The concept of "best paddleboard" is subjective. It depends on your expectations, your needs, and what you are primarily looking for in a paddleboard.
The best inflatable paddleboard for you won't necessarily be the best for your neighbor. Some will look for the best price, others for the best stability and/or versatility, or maximum performance. Each criterion will lead to different choices. There's no such thing as the perfect all-purpose paddleboard. It's all about finding the right balance. In this article, we'll help you choose and find the best paddleboard for you.
What are the criteria for choosing a paddleboard?
Rigid paddle VS inflatable paddle
The first criterion to consider is size. If you have plenty of space and live by the water, the space issue is different compared to those who live in an apartment. A rigid paddleboard will glide better and allow you to experience a more precise feel.
However, the paddleboard will be bulkier, more fragile and therefore not suitable for everyone.
An inflatable paddleboard is a really interesting alternative if you're not looking for extreme performance, as it allows you to do the same things as a hard board without the drawbacks. You'll lose a little glide and board rigidity compared to a hard SUP board. However, it's more family-friendly, easier to take on vacation, more durable, and perfectly adequate for recreational use.
Depending on the preferred disciplines (beginner, recreational, racing, surfing), the choice of paddleboard changes
Depending on whether you want to go for a ride, a sporty ride, an introduction, to take a child with you or to go racing or surfing, the size of the board changes, the width of the board changes, the rigidity of the board also changes (and therefore the construction) and simply the length of the board differs.
If you're a beginner, a shorter board around 10 feet will do just fine. The same applies if you want to surf; a board shorter than 10 feet is recommended as it will turn more easily.
If you are not very comfortable in terms of stability, opt for a board with plenty of width to increase your lateral stability.
If you are looking for a paddleboard for gliding and covering long distances, opt for a board that is longer than 11'6" – 14 feet.
Skill level (beginner, intermediate, expert)
The skill level of the paddler strongly influences the choice of board; a beginner, an intermediate paddler, or an expert will not use the same paddleboard sizes.
The trend will nevertheless remain the same.
Those who want to race or go for a long paddle will prefer large paddleboards, those who want to go in the waves will prefer small boards.
However, what will make the difference is the board width.
A beginner can certainly use a 12'6" paddleboard to start, but they should choose a slightly wider board for more stability (31 or 32 inches wide). Conversely, if an expert wants to use a 12'6", they would prefer a 12'6" x 28" board.
The width will determine the stability of a paddle; the wider the paddle, the more stable it will be, but it will slide less.
Therefore, the length of the board is not a criterion to consider depending on the skill level. It is rather the width that will be an important criterion.
Paddler's weight and height
Of course, the paddler's size will be fundamental in choosing the board. Proportionally speaking, if we're talking percentages, a 2-meter adult will be the same size for a 14-foot paddleboard as a 1.60-meter adult for a shorter one. We're talking about the relationship between the paddler's height and the board size. So, the taller you are, the more suitable a larger paddleboard will be. Unless you're short and want to maximize your glide, then a board longer than 12 feet will be beneficial.
Similarly, weight will influence the choice of board. A person with a significant weight will be more stable on a larger and wider board.
In summary, the size of each rider must be taken into account to optimize the choice of your board.
A smaller rider can choose from all sizes, while a heavier rider will need a larger and wider board to increase stability and glide.
5. The price
The price of a paddleboard is determined by many criteria; the list is not exhaustive, but it will give you more precise information about the quality of a paddleboard.
- The first factor to consider is the length of the paddleboard. A paddleboard is handmade. Therefore, the longer the SUP, the longer it takes to make. This is why longer paddleboards cost significantly more than, say, a 10-foot SUP.
- The second criterion is the quality of the PVC used. Indeed, there are many different grades of PVC. Some factories specialize in inflatable beach floats but also manufacture paddleboards. Other factories, like ours, manufacture high-end rigid inflatable boats (RIBs). In our factory, we use the same quality of PVC as in our RIBs. This allows us to be more impact-resistant, more rigid, and more durable. We still have some rental companies that have been using our products for over eight years without having changed them.
- The number of PVC layers used in the board. I grant you, from the outside, it's not visible. But the number of PVC layers determines the quality of the paddleboard, its rigidity, and its durability. To have an inexpensive paddleboard for under €200, the manufacturing time on each board must be reduced, the quality of the PVC must be lower, and the quantity and quality of the adhesives must be reduced (we'll discuss this point shortly). All of these cuts mean that a paddleboard can cost three times less to produce than a high-end product. In practical terms, this translates to a paddleboard that rolls up very easily (one of the criteria for the quantity and quality of the PVC used). The easier a paddleboard rolls up (when storing it), the less material it contains. The SUP will then be less rigid, more fragile, and less stable; every time a chop hits the board, you'll feel the movement of the chop.
Therefore, the harder a paddleboard is to fold, the heavier it will be (for the same size and dimensions), and the more rigid, solid, and durable it will be. The amount of material used in a board determines its rigidity, durability, and price.
- The quality of the adhesives. Just like the quantity and quality of the PVC used, this influences the durability of a paddleboard. The more expensive a paddleboard is, the better the quality and durability of the adhesives, allowing it to withstand high temperatures. Because we manufacture our paddleboards in factories that also produce rigid inflatable boats, we use the same adhesives, and therefore we are known for having strong and long-lasting products.
6. Important characteristics to consider
As we have seen, there are many criteria to consider.
- On the one hand, your technical level, a beginner in paddleboarding will not take the same board as an expert.
- Your program, whether you want to do a sporty paddle, an introductory session, or surfing. The size, shape, and width of the paddleboard will vary.
- Your size will inevitably influence the size of the paddleboard you will buy.
- If price is one of your main criteria, then you'll have to compromise on durability and rigidity. Again, the rigidity, durability, and stability of a paddleboard are determined by the amount of carbon fiber inside the board. The more layers, the higher the quality of the PVC and adhesives, and the longer your paddleboard will last.
- We therefore advise you to rinse it once in a while at low pressure with fresh water.
Presentation of the best paddleboards by category according to the criteria mentioned.
1) The beginner
If you have no experience in board sports, we recommend starting with a medium-length board (around 10-10'6") . It will offer great maneuverability and make the sport easier to learn. It will also be easier to inflate, store, and handle. This type of board is stable as long as it's wide enough. Therefore, we advise against going below 31 inches wide.
Of course, if you are tall and heavy, you will need to enlarge and widen the board a little (for example, a 10'6 x 32 board will do the job very well).
In our range, we recommend three paddles for beginners.
- The Ocean Walker 10'4 x 32 paddleboard is an access paddleboard, an all-purpose pack, easy, light and compact.
- The Easy 10 x 31 paddleboard or the Easy 10'6 x 32. The Easy 10 is by far the more accessible of the two; smaller and lighter, it will be perfectly suited to people under 85 kg. The second will be suitable for larger individuals.
- While continuing to move upmarket, the Malibu 10 and 10'6 paddleboards are professional-grade models. More robust and durable, they have built our reputation with watersports centers and beach clubs.
2) Solo walks
If you're looking for solo paddling trips, whether leisurely or more athletic, we recommend longer boards with a narrower nose. This allows for better glide and reduces water resistance . In practical terms, this means less paddling effort to cover the same distance. You'll exert less effort and go faster without straining yourself more.
To be perfectly suited to solo rides, we can recommend two ranges.
- The Easy range in 11'6 or 12'6, these are paddles that maintain width for maximum stability with very good glide and excellent value for money.
- The Alpha paddleboard range, from 11'6" x 32" to 14' x 27" , is a very high-end range, featuring reinforced, rigid PVC. This range comes closest to the rigidity of a rigid board.
3) Outing for two / with family
If you want to paddleboard with several people, you'll need a longer board. There are tandem paddleboards that can accommodate two adults and two children. These boards are much longer than usual (around 16 feet), but they allow everyone to paddle together and foster genuine cooperation. It's similar to the spirit of team sports: to move forward, you need to work together to make the board move.
This range is intended for riders who want to be two on one board.
The Easy Duo paddleboard offers the best value for money . Sturdy and ultra-stable, it can accommodate the whole family.
The professional-grade duo, on the other hand, is the most robust on the market; it was developed by clubs for clubs. It will provide slightly more rigidity and greater stability at higher speeds.
4) Race / racing
If you're looking to race or enjoy fast paddling, we recommend choosing a board longer than 12'6" with a very narrow width for optimal glide. For example, an Alpha 14' x 29" offers a perfect balance of speed and stability. The longer the board, the less you'll need to paddle to the right and left. You'll glide further with fewer strokes.
Without hesitation, we recommend the Alpha range in 12'6" x 28" or 14' x 27" or 29" widths . This professional range offers exceptional rigidity thanks to reinforced construction on the rails, deck, and hull. These paddleboards provide maximum glide, and their high rigidity ensures ultra-stable performance in all sea conditions.
5) Surfing
For surfing, you need a shorter board with a narrower outline at the nose and tail to improve maneuverability. These boards require a bit more agility and balance because they are slightly less stable. However, you can find a compromise by choosing a 10-foot board, for example, with a slightly less pinched outline at the tips, which will provide stability but slightly less maneuverability.
We recommend 3 different models:
- The first one, the wave 9'5. It is designed for 70% surfing and 30% touring, it is part of the professional range, it is reinforced and therefore more rigid, it will give you perfect sensations for sup surfing.
- Another option is the Easy 10 or the Malibu 10, both paddleboards designed for 70% cruising and 30% wave riding. They will be slightly less maneuverable but more stable.
- The Malibu is part of the professional range, therefore ultra-reinforced, and the Easy 10, which has the same shape, has a great price/quality ratio.
6) Are there versatile paddleboards for different uses?
Yes, there are indeed versatile paddleboards, but not for every discipline at once. If you want to surf, race, and need a stable board that isn't too big, it's going to be difficult to do everything. It's like any sport. A product touted as being all-purpose will never be suitable for every discipline.
Therefore, choices must be made.
For example, if you want 30% wave riding and 70% family outings, the same paddleboard can be used. If you want to do some sporty paddling but also have a paddleboard for the family, that's perfectly possible. You'll just have to accept that you won't be an expert in every discipline.
We would recommend the Easy 10 or Malibu 10 range, which would be a good compromise for surfing and cruising . If you are heavier, opt for the Easy 10'6 or the Malibu 10'6.
If you want to get started and do some light touring (without needing a very specific use case), we recommend you look at the Easy 11'6 or 12'6 range, or the Alpha range in 11'6 x 32 or 12'6 x 31.
Comparison of the different types of paddleboards available on the market
1) Which brand should I choose for a quality paddleboard?
[wptb id=88515]
2) What makes an inflatable paddleboard better than others?
- PVC Quality : Different grades of PVC exist, each with its own rigidity. Some brands use truck tarpaulin, while others, like us, prefer PVC specifically designed for rigid inflatable boats. This reinforced PVC offers a longer lifespan.
- Adhesive Quality : The adhesives used play a crucial role. We have chosen to work with the same suppliers as for our rigid inflatable boats. Some brands reduce the quality of their adhesives to lower manufacturing costs, but this can compromise the board's longevity.
- Amount of PVC in the board : The more PVC there is, the stiffer the paddleboard. In short, a very lightweight paddleboard contains less material inside, while a reinforced paddleboard will be slightly heavier due to its additional layers of PVC on the rails or its increased thickness.
These three factors contribute to the quality and performance of a paddleboard. Finding the right balance between stiffness, durability, and weight is essential to choosing the board that best suits you.
- Paddleboard Shape : The shape of the paddleboard is essential and varies depending on your intended use. For example, boards longer than 11 feet are ideal for touring and long distances. On the other hand, a shorter board is better suited to waves or family outings. It's important to note that water generates 800 times more drag than air. That's why we dedicate time to testing our paddleboards with our naval architect to find the right balance between rigidity, glide, and stability.
- Colors and design : A high-performance paddleboard that is rigid, stable, and aesthetically pleasing increases the perceived value of the product. Furthermore, an attractive design can be a factor when you decide to resell your paddleboard.
- Quality equipment : The quality of the bag, pump, and paddle directly impacts the overall quality of your product. Even if you have the best paddleboard on the market, a poor-quality pump or paddle can compromise its usability.
- Price : Price is an undeniable indicator of quality. A paddleboard sold for 150 euros probably cannot be considered a high-quality product.
All of these criteria allow us to differentiate the quality and help you to better choose one paddleboard over another .
At SROKA, your goal is clear: to offer quality products that meet all needs. We offer three product lines:
- Ocean Walker : In this range, you retain the high-quality adhesives and PVC from your factories, but you reduce the quantity. This allows you to offer an attractive price while guaranteeing the product's durability.
- The Easy range offers the best value for money.
- High-End Paddles : You offer two high-end ranges, the Alpha and the Malibu .
It's reassuring to know that you emphasize quality and customer satisfaction.
3) Does the price influence the quality of a paddleboard?
To summarize, the quality of a paddleboard depends on several factors, including:
- Number of layers: Several layers of reinforced PVC contribute to the paddle's rigidity and durability. However, this also increases the manufacturing cost.
- Material quality: The quality of the PVC and glues used affects the performance and longevity of the paddleboard. Choosing high-quality materials is essential.
- Handcrafted construction: The paddles are handmade, which requires more time and labor. This is reflected in the final price.
- Accessories and design: Quality accessories, as well as careful design, can also influence the price.
In short, finding the right balance between quality, performance and budget is crucial when choosing a paddleboard.
Conclusion
Choosing the right paddleboard depends on your plans and specific needs. Here are some tips to guide you:
- Glide Type: If you're looking for better glide, opt for stand-up paddleboards with pointed noses. These boards are designed to cut through the water more efficiently and offer an optimal gliding experience.
- Criteria to Consider:
- Technical Level : Your level of experience plays a crucial role. Beginners may prefer more stable boards, while experts may opt for higher-performance models.
- Size : Your height and weight influence the choice of board. A board suited to your size will allow you to better balance and maneuver.
-
Product Quality Desired : Determine if you prefer an entry-level option, good value for money, or a high-end model.
- Intended Use : The paddle length varies depending on your intended use:
- For leisurely paddling and long distances , opt for boards over 11 feet.
- For waves or family outings, a shorter board will be more suitable.
- Be careful when choosing a paddleboard: If you choose an unsuitable board, you may have difficulty staying upright. On the other hand, a wise choice will allow you to fully enjoy your experience on the water.
