Should you wing foil with or without footstraps? Many riders wonder about the use of footstraps. That's why we're taking the time to explain in detail the conditions under which footstraps are appropriate.
Wing foiling with or without straps?
What is a footstrap?
Foot straps were created to provide maximum support and comfort when standing on your board, regardless of the sport. They are foot strap inserts placed at the front and back of the board. Their position will depend on your riding style (goofy or regular) and your preference for comfort on smaller boards or for riding on both sides, depending on the board model.
First, it will mainly depend on your wingsurfing skill level, your preferences, and your riding style. Testing the different options and choosing based on your own experience is the best way to determine whether you prefer wing foiling with or without straps . However, our experience and practice in board sports allow us to offer you the best advice in this article.
WINGFOIL WITH STRAPS
This option will satisfy experienced riders who want to have fun, perform jumps, backflips, and more. You'll have greater control, and your abilities will be maximized and exhilarating, whether jumping in stronger winds or pumping. When pumping on the foil with footstraps, you feel the leverage more, and the movements are more fluid and aerial. This is also advantageous for performing aggressive turns when wing foiling.
Keep in mind that sailing this way will work very well on a straight course, across the wind, and upwind. However, you might be at a disadvantage in turns or depending on the point of sail. Here we can see that Titouan is pulling on the footstraps to angle the board.
Most of the time, when people want to adopt a freeride style, they opt for a smaller board, generally equipped with inserts. This provides a feeling of stability in flight. It also allows for jumps with smaller boards.
It's important to know the ideal foot placement to adjust your foot straps and achieve the most optimal stance. This position varies depending on the front wing and your weight and skill level. However, we don't recommend starting with foot straps, as they increase the risk of sprains in case of falls (and there can be many at the beginning!). Especially since, when starting out, jumps and freeriding aren't usually the priority. For beginners, not using foot straps allows you to reposition your feet if you make a mistake.
Among our rigid SROKA wingsurf boards, the Fast Flyer 4'6 and the Sky Rider 5'5 are equipped with front and rear inserts. This allows you to perform jumps, jibes, and surfs without compromise.
WINGFOIL IN STRAPLESS
Riding strapless is the most recommended option when starting out in wing foiling. We could even say that using footstraps is unnecessary during the initial learning phase (it will be more of a hindrance than a help). A beginner will have difficulty positioning their feet precisely. Therefore, not using footstraps will make riding easier.
Contrary to popular belief, strapless wing foiling will actually make you feel a bit safer . It reduces the risk of twisting your ankles (compared to when your foot is strapped in). Furthermore, it allows you to adjust your foot position depending on the wind direction. In a small wave, you can move your feet back a bit on the board. Whereas in a bigger wave, you'll tend to move them forward to counteract the increased power generated by the wave's force.
Generally, when you start out, you have a large, stable board. You can position your feet as you prefer, while still having enough stability with the board to stay upright .
You won't have to struggle with straps that aren't always positioned in the ideal final foot placement for you. The deck is clear, which increases the ease of movement and transitions, depending on speed and power.
Riding strapless offers absolute freedom of movement , and you'll know exactly where your feet are when you want to use footstraps. This allows you to fully feel the foil and the board, becoming one with the elements. Getting back on the board won't be hindered, as your leash won't get caught in it. This way, you'll progress much faster.
Honestly, strapless is for us the most enjoyable option, the easiest for making transitions, and the one that provides the most freedom and comfort regardless of speed and conditions.
We've chosen not to include strap inserts on our Wing Foil boards, which are designed for beginners or larger riders, so as not to hinder your progression. This applies to our Sky Rider 5'8 and 6'3 fiberglass models.
WINGFOIL WITH A SINGLE STRAPS
At a crossroads, sailing with a single front strap is a good compromise if you don't want to jump, but still want to pump or increase control in challenging conditions. This option allows you to progress faster than with two inserts, as you won't be hindered by the one at the back. In fact, the back strap can be uncomfortable, and many people don't even use it.
Another advantage is that it helps you position your front foot and provides a reference point for your stance . The front foot acts as a lever, while the back foot is free, allowing you to rebalance if your front foot placement isn't correct . Furthermore, it prevents you from forcing turns and gives you better control. You can adjust your stance depending on the situation (surfing, downwind riding, etc.). Again, be careful that your foot doesn't get caught in case of a fall!
As for the SROKA Air inflatable boards , these are equipped with inserts at the front (for a V-shaped installation).
In summary:
In any case, there's no right or wrong choice; you just have to make it according to your preferences and:
- Your level : beginner, intermediate, experienced.
- Your riding style and whether you want to do jumps, maneuvers, and have efficient pumping (even if you're not technically the best).
- Your board design , knowing that it is pointless to put two inserts on a board with volume.
It can also be interesting to alternate, sometimes strapped and sometimes strapless , to maintain versatility between different types of practice, vary the sensations and continue to progress technically.
