Should you wing foil with or without straps? Many riders wonder about the use of straps. That's why we're taking the time to explain in detail the conditions under which footstraps should be adopted.
Wing Foiling with or without straps?
What is a footstrap?
Foot-straps were created to provide maximum support and comfort for standing on your board, regardless of the sport. They are strap inserts for the feet, placed at the front and back of the board. Their position will depend on your riding style (goofy or regular) and your preference in terms of comfort on smaller boards or for riding on both sides, depending on the board models.
Firstly, it will mainly depend on your level in Wingsurf, your preferences, and your practice. Testing the different possibilities and choosing according to your own feeling is the best way to know if you prefer to wing foil with or without straps. Nevertheless, our experience and practice of board sports allow us to advise you best in this article.
WING FOILING WITH STRAPS
This option will satisfy experienced riders who want to have fun, perform jumps, backflips, etc. You will have more control, and your capabilities will be maximized and sensational, whether in jumps, stronger winds, or pumping. When pumping on the foil with footstraps, you feel the leverage effect more, and movements are more aerial. This is also interesting for aggressive turns when wing foiling.
Remember that riding this way will be very good in a straight line, crosswind, and upwind. However, you might be disadvantaged in turns or depending on the point of sail. Here we can see Titouan pulling on the footstraps to angle the board.
Most of the time, when you want to adopt a freeride practice, you opt for a smaller board, usually all equipped with inserts. This provides a feeling of stability in flight. It also allows you to jump with smaller boards.
It is important to know the ideal positioning of your feet to adjust your footstraps and have the most optimal position. This position changes depending on the front wings and your weight and level. However, for us, it is unnecessary to start with straps, which increase the risk of sprains in case of falls (and there can be many at the beginning!). Especially since when you start, the priority is generally not jumps and freeride. For beginners, not having straps allows you to reposition your feet in case of incorrect positioning.
Among our SROKA rigid Wingsurf boards, the Fast Flyer 4'6, as well as the Sky Rider 5'5, are equipped with front and rear inserts. Enough to allow you to send jumps, jibes, and surfs without any compromise.
STRAPLESS WING FOILING
Riding strapless when starting out in Wing Foil is the most recommended option. We could even say that it's unnecessary to use footstraps during the initiation period (it will be more of a hindrance than a benefit). A beginner will have difficulty positioning their feet precisely. Therefore, not using footstraps will make riding easier for you.
Contrary to popular belief, strapless Wing Foiling will make you feel a little safer. Indeed, it reduces the risk of twisting your ankles (vs. when your foot is caught in the strap). Moreover, it allows you to adapt your foot position according to the points of sail. In a soft wave, you can move your weight back a little more on the board. Whereas on a bigger wave, you'll tend to move your weight forward a little to counteract the overpowering force generated by the wave.
Generally, when you start, you have a big, stable board. You can position your feet as you prefer, while having enough stability with the board to stay standing.
You won't have to struggle with straps that aren't always placed in the ideal final foot position for you. The deck is clear, which increases the simplicity of movement and transitions, depending on speed and power.
Riding strapless gives you absolute freedom in your movements, and you'll know perfectly the foot positioning that suits you when you want to ride with footstraps. This allows you to fully feel the foil and the board and become one with the elements. You won't be hindered from getting back on the board, and you won't get your leash tangled. In this way, you'll progress much faster.
Honestly, strapless is for us the most enjoyable option, the easiest for transitions, and the one that provides the most freedom and comfort whatever the conditions and points of sail.
We choose not to put strap inserts on our Wing Foil boards, which are intended for beginners or larger riders, so as not to hinder your progress. This is the case for our Sky Rider 5'8 and 6'3 fiberglass models.
WING FOILING WITH A SINGLE STRAP
At the crossroads, riding with a single strap at the front is a good compromise if you don't want to jump but still want to pump or increase control in challenging conditions. This option allows you to progress faster than with two inserts, as you won't be bothered by the one placed at the back. Indeed, the back strap can be uncomfortable, and many don't even use it.
The advantage is that it helps you position your front foot and provides a reference point for your placement. The front foot acts as a lever, while the back foot is free, allowing you to rebalance if your front foot support is not good. Furthermore, it avoids over-exerting yourself in turns and benefits from better control. You can adjust your placement depending on the situation (surfing, downwind riding, etc.). Be careful again not to get your foot stuck in case of a fall!
Regarding SROKA Air inflatable boards, they are equipped with front inserts (for a V-shaped installation).
In summary:
In any case, there's no right or wrong choice; you just have to decide based on your preferences and:
- Your level: beginner, intermediate, experienced.
- Your type of riding and whether you want to perform jumps, maneuvers, or have efficient pumping (even if technically you're not the best).
- Your board model, knowing that there's no need to install two inserts on a high-volume board.
It can also be interesting to alternate, sometimes with straps and sometimes strapless, to maintain versatility between different types of practices, vary sensations, and continue to progress technically.
