What are the weather conditions for wing foiling?

There are several weather factors to consider when practicing Wing Foil in the best conditions. We will examine these factors and the tools available to analyze them.

Step 1: Checking the condition of the wing

Preparing your wing foil is quite simple; you just need to pay attention to a few points. First, before heading out to sea, it's important to visually inspect your wing. The goal is to ensure there are no defects such as cuts or tears in the fabric. This could also include scratches on the leading or trailing edge. If you notice any damage, it is strongly recommended that you do not use the wing until it has been repaired.

We then advise you to test the air pressure in the wing. To do this, use the pressure gauge on your pump. Make sure the pressure meets the manufacturer's specifications. For our Wing V3, we recommend inflation between 6 and 8 PSI (not to be confused with 6 and 8 bar… yes, it happens). If the pressure is insufficient, add air until it is correct. If the pressure is excessive, do not go in the water and release some air to reach the recommended pressure.

Weather factors important for Wing Foiling

    1. Wind speed and direction : wind is the main source of energy for wing foiling, so it is important to know its speed and direction to choose the right spot
    2. Wave height : Wave height varies depending on weather conditions. High waves can naturally make wing foiling more difficult, or even dangerous if you are not experienced enough.
    3. Swell direction : The direction of the swell affects your stability and the quality of the waves for foil surfing. It's best to choose a swell that arrives at the spot regularly and steadily.
    4. Temperature : Temperature is an important factor for your wingfoil equipment. Be careful with heat. If you leave your board in direct sunlight, the internal pressure can build up and damage it. To avoid this, slightly loosen the decompression screw when the board will be exposed to heat for an extended period. However, remember to tighten it before going on the water!

The ideal conditions to start Wing Foiling

    Wind speed

For beginners in wing foiling, the recommended wind speed is between 13 and 15 knots . Starting wing foiling in 13 knots will make it difficult to take off, especially if you are larger. However, this will allow you to get a feel for the board and move smoothly across the water without risk. Once you are comfortable with controlling the wing and the board, you can seek out slightly stronger winds. A wind speed of 15 knots is ideal for being able to fly.

    Wind direction

To get started with wing foiling in the best conditions, we recommend choosing a day when the wind is blowing consistently from the same direction. This will allow you to focus on learning the basics of wing foiling without being disturbed by changes in wind strength or direction. Wind direction also influences the quality of the water.

    The different wind directions:

    • Offshore and Side Offshore : Offshore winds, meaning winds blowing from the land towards the sea, should be absolutely avoided by beginners. They are dangerous because if you get into difficulty and don't yet know how to sail upwind, the wind will carry you out to sea.
    • Onshore : A completely onshore wind isn't ideal either (a straight breeze from the sea towards the beach). It's a safe wind, but troublesome for beginners. Getting started will be difficult, and you'll constantly be pushed towards the beach.
    • Sideshore and onshore : These are the best wind directions for beginners! Here, the wind blows diagonally, from the sea towards the beach (side-onshore) or from the side (sideshore). These are the optimal directions for starting out. They are safe but also ideal for having fun and progressing easily.

    The height of the waves

To start wing foiling, we recommend choosing the flattest body of water possible . The best option is to learn on a lake. A flat body of water allows you to concentrate fully on learning basic techniques and maneuvers without being thrown off balance by waves. However, it's important to know that on inland bodies of water like lakes, the wind is often more gusty.

How to predict weather conditions for Wing Foiling

Weather conditions are not an exact science; it's important to remember that the weather can change very quickly. However, to plan your wingfoil, surf, or kiteboarding sessions, many apps offer fairly reliable 1- or 2-day forecasts:

    • Wind forecast websites and apps : if you sail at sea, there are sites like Windguru or Météo Marine that will provide you with forecasts on wind, swell, tide, temperature... These sites, also available as apps, are very useful for estimating the weather conditions at a Wing Foil spot.
    • Live wind conditions : Several websites offer free, real-time readings to share live wind strength. Windy, for example, offers an interactive map. To quickly find weather stations providing live wind conditions, you can search for "live wind reading [Your City/Spot]". Some of these sites, like Winds-up or Infosvent, offer live readings, but the free version only provides access to readings from the last few hours.
    • Wave forecast websites : to find out about wave forecasts, you can use sites like Surf report or Surf forecast which are useful for Wing Foil and quite reliable.

Frequently asked questions about weather conditions for Wing Foiling

What is the minimum wind speed required to practice wing foiling?
The minimum wind speed for wing foiling is generally 7 or 8 knots. However, this depends on individual skill level. A beginner in wing foiling will need a minimum of 13 knots to sail comfortably.

Is there a maximum wind speed beyond which wing foiling should not be done?
In general, it is strongly advised against practicing wing foiling when the wind speed exceeds 30 knots, or approximately 55 km/h. However, this can vary depending on size, weight, and experience level.

Can air and water temperature influence the practice of wing foiling?
Not especially, the air and water temperature mainly influences your sailing comfort.

    Can rain affect wing foiling?
Heavy rain can only impair visibility between riders.

    Common mistakes to avoid:

    1. A wind speed between 13 and 15 knots is ideal for starting Wingfoil.
    2. Favor Sideshore (from the side) and Side On (from the sea) winds for greater safety and easier learning.
    3. Keep in mind that weather conditions are not 100% reliable and may change during the session.
    4. If you are discovering a spot for the first time, whether you are a beginner or experienced, do not hesitate to talk to the regulars to learn more about the particularities of the spot or the optimal conditions for Wing Foiling.
