The different disciplines of wing foiling

Wing foiling, a constantly evolving sport, offers a multitude of possibilities for self-expression on the water. Each discipline has its own characteristics, its own rules, and its own communities. Let's explore them together:

    Freestyle: the expression of creativity

Freestyle is the ultimate discipline for fans of aerial tricks and thrills. Riders perform a series of rotations, handle passes, and other spectacular maneuvers.

    • Objective: To create technical and aesthetically pleasing figures.
    • Equipment: The wings are relatively small, the small and maneuverable foils facilitate rotations, and the boards are compact and responsive.
    • Organization: Freestyle competitions often take place in a "best trick" format where riders perform a series of tricks scored by a jury. The events are often very spectacular and attract large audiences.

    The Race: pure speed

For speed and competition enthusiasts, wing foil racing is the ideal discipline. Riders compete on set courses, the goal being to be the fastest and to be the first to cross the finish line.

    • Objective: to be the fastest on the course.
    • Equipment: Wings are rather large for maximum power, boards are long and narrow for better glide, foils offer high speed with more wingspans to go well upwind or are compact to go fast.
    • Organization: Race competitions take place in the form of sprint races or slaloms. The courses are marked by buoys and the starts are in a line.

The Wave: surfing the power of the ocean

Wave wing foiling is the ideal discipline for surfers looking for new ways to play with the waves. Riders use the power of the waves to perform powerful and technical maneuvers.

    • Objective: To surf the waves using the wing as a point of support.
    • Equipment: Medium-sized wing, surfboards adapted for foiling, foils offering good maneuverability with maximum control.
    • Organization: Wave competitions take place at renowned surf spots. Riders are judged on the quality of their waves, the variety of their maneuvers, and their style.

    Freeriding: the freedom to ride

Freeriding is the most accessible and versatile discipline. It's simply about enjoying the thrill of skiing in complete freedom, without constraints or specific goals.

    • Objective: To have fun and explore new spots with friends.
    • Equipment: Versatile equipment, suitable for all levels.
    • Organization: No particular organization, other than getting together with friends to share their passion.

The Downwind: The Quest for the Horizon

Downwind sailing involves covering long distances by following the wind. It is a demanding discipline that requires good physical condition and excellent equipment handling skills.

    • Objective: To cover the greatest possible distance by following the wind.
    • Equipment: Small wings, very long and narrow boards, foils offering excellent glide with high aspect ratios.
    • Organization: Downwind competitions often take place over long distances, at sea or on lakes. Riders are equipped with GPS tracking systems to record their performance.

    Big Air: Touching the Sky

Big air is a still emerging discipline that involves performing impressive vertical jumps. Riders use medium-sized kites in very strong winds and foils that provide maximum lift to rise above the water.

    • Objective: To achieve the highest possible jump.
    • Equipment: Wings with high lift, specific boards, foils offering high lift and maximum speed.
    • Organization: there is currently no competition in this discipline.

In summary , wing foiling is a rich and varied sport offering a multitude of possibilities. Whether you're looking for thrills, athletic challenges, or simply a relaxing experience, you're sure to find the discipline that suits you.

Don't hesitate to explore the different disciplines and find the one that fascinates you the most!

It is to meet this diversity of disciplines that we have different shapes and sizes of foil wings.

Choose your discipline according to your profile

Your choice of discipline will depend on your preferences and your level.

    • Beginner: Start with freeride or wave riding to learn the basics. Choosing a standard SROKA package will allow you to start and progress easily.
    • Confirmed: If you've mastered the basics, you can move towards freestyle, racing, or downwind. In this case, you'll need to choose your boards, wing, and foil based on what you want to do. To stay foiling longer, you'll need foil wings with a higher aspect ratio. For those who want to do freestyle, you'll need more compact wings with good lift and speed.
    • Competitor: To reach the top level, wing foil racing is the ideal discipline. It is accessible to all levels and ages.

    Equipment specific to each discipline

Choosing the right equipment is essential for making rapid and safe progress. SROKA offers a complete range of equipment suitable for almost all disciplines:

    • Wingfoil wings: Lightweight, high-performance, and durable, SROKA wings are designed to deliver maximum thrills. We offer two models: the Standard V4 and the Elite. The Elite is stiffer and offers higher performance, catering to demanding riders. For junior racing, the Elite wing is perfectly adequate, but for professionals, a double-skin wing is recommended.
    • The boards: SROKA's distinguishing feature is its quality construction and sturdiness. Stability, comfort, and maneuverability are the key features of SROKA boards.
    • Foils: SROKA foils, designed for excellent, smooth, and precise gliding, will allow you to plane easily. If you want to ride waves, go for the Control range; if you want to do freestyle, wave riding, and racing, go for the HA range; if you want to do downwind, freeride, or racing, the UHA and DW ranges will be suitable for you.
