The different disciplines of wing foiling

Wing foiling, a constantly evolving sport, offers a multitude of possibilities for expressing oneself on the water. Each discipline has its own characteristics, its own codes, and its own communities. Let's explore them together:

    Freestyle: the expression of creativity

Freestyle is the ultimate discipline for aerial trick enthusiasts and thrill-seekers. Riders perform rotations, handle passes, and other spectacular maneuvers.

    • Objective: Execute technical and aesthetic tricks.
    • Equipment: Wings are relatively small, small and agile foils facilitate rotations, and boards are compact and reactive.
    • Organization: Freestyle competitions often take place in a "best trick" format where riders perform a series of tricks judged by a panel. Events are often very spectacular and attract a large audience.

    Race: pure speed

For speed and competition enthusiasts, wing foil racing is the ideal discipline. Riders compete on defined courses, with the goal of being the fastest and crossing the finish line first.

    • Objective: Be the fastest on the course.
    • Equipment: Wings are rather large for maximum power, boards are long and narrow for better glide, and foils offer high speed with greater wingspans for good upwind performance or compact ones for high speed.
    • Organization: Race competitions take place in the form of line races or slaloms. Courses are marked by buoys, and starts are staggered.

    Wave: surfing the ocean's power

Wave wing foiling is the ideal discipline for surfers looking for new ways to play with waves. Riders use the power of the waves to perform technical and powerful maneuvers.

    • Objective: Surf waves using the wing as a point of support.
    • Equipment: Medium-sized wing, foil-adapted surfboards, foils offering good maneuverability with maximum control.
    • Organization: Wave competitions take place at renowned surf spots. Riders are judged on the quality of their waves, the variety of their maneuvers, and their style.

    Freeride: the freedom to ride

Freeride is the most accessible and versatile discipline. It's simply about enjoying the glide freely, without constraints or specific goals.

    • Objective: Have fun and explore new spots with friends.
    • Equipment: Versatile equipment, suitable for all levels.
    • Organization: No particular organization, except getting together with friends to share your passion.

Downwind: the quest for the horizon

Downwinding involves covering long distances by following the wind. It's a demanding discipline that requires good physical condition and excellent mastery of equipment.

    • Objective: Cover the greatest possible distance by following the wind.
    • Equipment: Small wing, very long and narrow boards, foils offering excellent glide with high aspect ratios.
    • Organization: Downwind competitions often take place over long distances, at sea or on lakes. Riders are equipped with GPS tracking systems to record their performance.

    Big Air: touching the sky

Big Air is still an emerging discipline, which consists of performing impressive vertical jumps. Riders use medium-sized wings in very strong winds and foils offering maximum lift to rise above the water.

    • Objective: Achieve the highest possible jump.
    • Equipment: Wings with high lift, specific boards, foils offering high lift and maximum speed.
    • Organization: There are no competitions in this discipline yet.

In summary, wing foiling is a rich and varied sport that offers a multitude of possibilities. Whether you are looking for thrills, sporting challenges or simply a moment of relaxation, you will inevitably find the discipline that suits you.

Feel free to explore the different disciplines and find the one that excites you the most!

It is to meet this diversity of disciplines that we have different shapes and sizes of foil wings.

Choosing your discipline based on your profile

The choice of your discipline will depend on your preferences and your level.

    • Beginner: Start with freeride or wave to learn the basics. Choosing a standard SROKA pack will allow you to start and progress easily.
    • Experienced: If you master the basics, you can move towards freestyle, race or downwind. In this case, you will have to choose boards, wings and foils according to what you want to do. To glide longer, you will need foil wings with more span (a high Aspect Ratio). For those who want to do freestyle, you will need more compact wings with good lift and speed.
    • Competitor: To reach a high level, wing foil racing is the ideal discipline. It is accessible to all levels and ages.

The specific equipment for each discipline

The choice of equipment is essential for rapid and safe progress. SROKA offers a complete range of equipment adapted to almost all disciplines:

    • Wingfoil wings: Lightweight, high-performance and durable, SROKA wings are designed to offer maximum sensations. We have two models planned. The Standard V4 version and the Elite version are stiffer and more powerful and will meet the demands of discerning riders. For junior racing, the Elite wing will do very well, but for pros, you will need a double skin wing.
    • Boards: The unique selling point of SROKA is the quality of construction and durability. Stability, comfort and maneuverability are the keywords of SROKA boards.
    • Foils: SROKA foils, designed for excellent smooth and precise gliding, will allow you to glide easily. If you want to ride waves, go for the Control range; if you want to do freestyle, wave, and race, go for the HA range; if you want to do Downwind, freeride, or race, the UHA and DW range will be interesting for you.
