It's a device that often resembles an airplane. It's placed in the water, on the hull of a boat, allowing it to rise above the water thanks to the lift generated by the foil. The foil functions like an underwater airplane wing and provides an incredible gliding sensation. Tabarly popularized the concept in the 1980s. It's now found in all board sports.

You can do just about anything with a foil, from offshore racing like the Vendée Globe to dinghy sailing. All traditional board sports have embraced foiling in recent years. So you can practice foil surfing, SUP foiling, windsurf foiling, kite foiling, wake foiling… or even wing foiling, a unique and increasingly popular hybrid of these sports.

Activities like stand-up paddleboarding (SUP), kitesurfing, windsurfing, and surfing require a solid grasp of the equipment before attempting foiling. It's best to start with a foiling technique derived from your original sport (if you come from surfing, start with surf foiling). Wing foiling remains accessible without prior watersports experience, although it's easier to progress quickly with some prior knowledge.

Sroka foils consist of several components. There's the plate that connects the board to the foil. Then there's the mast, which fits into the plate. At the end of the mast is what's called the "plane"; a front wing and a stabilizer connected by a fuselage. On the S-Foil, the plate, mast, and fuselage are made of aluminum, while the front wing and stabilizer are made of carbon fiber. The Kite Foil offers an all-carbon fiber option.
