Gruissan, nicknamed the pearl of the Mediterranean coast, is a dream destination for wing foil enthusiasts. The town, renowned for its authentic charm, offers an environment conducive to wind and board sports, making it a privileged place to indulge in this emerging discipline.

    Must-Visit Wingfoil Spots in Gruissan

Located at the heart of corridors where the Tramontana wind accelerates, Gruissan enjoys over 300 days of wind annually. Its relaxed atmosphere and picturesque landscapes make it an ideal playground for wingfoil enthusiasts. The numerous specialized shops on-site offer visitors the opportunity to acquire the necessary equipment and benefit from repair services, ensuring a hassle-free experience.

    Plage des Chalets

First on our list, the Plage des Chalets, provides easier access to our second spot, Plage de la Vieille Nouvelle. Les Chalets is the beach that hosts the mythical Défi Wind, which now includes Défi Kite and Défi Wing. At Les Chalets, the wind is often quite unstable due to urban development upwind of the beach, but as soon as you cross the dike... the magic begins. Be careful, in summer, launching is prohibited due to the swimming area. You will have to launch in the channels and navigate 300 meters offshore.

    La Vieille Nouvelle

The Vieille spot has been the Mecca of windsurfing for over 20 years, well-known for the Defi wind. It will allow you to do runs of more than 10 km in a Tramontana that can gain more than 10 knots between Gruissan and Port-la-Nouvelle. The backdrop with views of the Canigou... the wild beach... in short, pure bliss. Be careful, for some time now, car access to the beach is no longer possible, or very risky (we're talking about a 1500 euro fine). You now have to access it differently, either via the canal or via the Plage des Chalets.

Mateille, it's small, it's a pond, there are a lot of beginners and a school, but it feels so good! The spot is terribly sheltered from the wind and unstable in Tramontana, but as soon as the "grec," the wind coming from the south, picks up, the spot becomes legendary. The sessions are a kind of gathering of friends with the same passion.

At La Nautique, the wind comes in from any direction. The spot is safe because it's a pond. A small chop (which can get quite big) will allow you to practice all types of sailing. Be careful with the bottom, however, the pond was for a long time Narbonne's "dump," the atmosphere there is made of stone blocks and broken tiles on the water's edge (it depends on where you launch).

    Varied Activities in Gruissan

Gruissan and its surroundings lend themselves to a variety of activities, from wingfoiling on windy days to paddleboarding when the sea is calm (often, this is the Mediterranean). Dockstarting is also an option, provided you find a suitable pontoon. For the curious, learning beach start foiling is an exciting option that we will explore in our next articles. you wouldn't want to rinse your wing every time. We therefore advise you to rinse it from time to time with low-pressure fresh water.

Tips for Wing Foil Equipment in Gruissan

Mediterranean winds can be powerful and erratic, challenging even experienced riders. Two approaches are available to you depending on your skill level for choosing your wing foil equipment:

    For experienced practitioners:

Opt for varied equipment, prioritizing small boards and foils adapted to strong conditions. As an example, the SROKA team recommends a 4'6" or 4'8" Superfly, 3,4 and 5m² V3 wings, a 14mm Elite foil with a carbon fuselage, a 180cm² stabilizer, and three smaller wings to adapt to all conditions.

    For progressing practitioners:

Choose equipment you are comfortable with, remaining aware of potentially strong and unstable conditions. Safety is paramount, especially at sea with offshore winds.

Maintaining your kite surf and wing foil wings: beware of the sun!
