A paddleboard leash is a safety cord that connects you to your stand-up paddleboard (SUP). It prevents the board from drifting away from you if you fall, thus ensuring your safety on the water.

Using a paddleboard leash is crucial for your safety. In case of a fall, it allows you to stay attached to your board, reducing the risk of being swept away from it, especially if there is a current.

The leash length should generally be equal to or slightly longer than the length of your SUP board. This ensures sufficient distance to prevent the board from bouncing back towards you in case of a fall.

There are two main types of paddleboard leashes: straight leashes and coiled leashes. Straight leashes are ideal for SUP surfing, while coiled leashes are perfect for calm waters and prevent dragging in the water.

Rinse your leash with fresh water after each use to remove salt and sand. Regularly check the condition of the cord and fittings for any wear or damage, and replace them if necessary.

Attach the leash to the attachment ring (or “plug”) located at the rear of your SUP board. Then, secure the strap around your ankle or calf, depending on the type of leash, ensuring it is snug but comfortable.
