A discipline that needs no wind

A 30 to 40 cm swell never breaks. It doesn't even form a wave in the true surfing sense. Yet with a foil under the board, it's enough to get up on foil and glide. That's the entire difference between surf foil and the rest of the SROKA catalog: no wing to inflate, no wind window to watch for. Just a short board, a foil, and a little swell.

The discipline was born in the early 2000s in the wake of towed surfing, before democratizing from 2016 onward under the impetus of Hawaiian riders. It then naturally established itself on the Breton coast, where Bruno Sroka develops and tests each board and foil in the range.

The foil, the piece that does everything

In wing foil or kitesurfing, it's the wing that provides most of the power. In surf foil, there isn't one: all the energy comes from the swell and your pumping. The foil must therefore be calibrated differently: more responsive, shorter, closer to the body.

The mast is short: 70 cm to get started, 80 cm maximum for riders looking to clear the fuselage more in the wave trough. The fuselage itself benefits from being short (between 56 and 61 cm) to respond quickly to pumping, unlike the long fuselages favored in wing foil or downwind.

The parameter that really changes the feel on the water is the front wing area:

The choice of front wing depends on the rider's profile. For first sessions, aim for a 1500 or 1250 Control wing, which offers easy lift and simple takeoff. For an intermediate rider, the 1190L wing is suitable, with early takeoff and better tolerance for error. Finally, for an advanced rider, the 1190S or 1190W (High Aspect) wing is recommended, to seek speed, radicalness, and better pumping efficiency.

The board: short, light, easy to paddle

Surf foil is paddled flat or on the knees, never standing. The priority is therefore not stability but paddling speed and light takeoff, almost the opposite of a wing foil board, where volume helps get up on foil without paddling effort.

In the SROKA range, we stay under 40 liters for most sizes, with a marked rocker that catches the swell as soon as it rises. Dockstart and pumping, the true training ground

The dockstart consists of taking off from a dock by running with the board, without a hint of swell; and pumping allows you to link several waves without ever resting the board on the water.

How much does a complete setup cost?

Expect around €1,285 for a complete board + foil package ready to ride, like the SW + S-Foil package. It's the most direct entry point into the discipline at SROKA. Find the full selection on the surf foil packages page.

For those who want to switch to full carbon, expect around €1,800 for an Elite mast and fuselage, and over €2,200 for a complete Elite carbon foil. A budget justified by the weight savings and material durability over time.

What you need in addition

Three accessories really make a difference once you've chosen your board and foil:

• A 10' coil leash, to keep the foil close to you after a fall rather than letting it drift in the water.
• Some footstraps, to lock in your stance when pumping and dockstarting.
• A wing covers and a board bag for transport.

Sharing the wave with a foil

A foil in a surf break changes things for everyone, not just you. A few reflexes are essential:

• The leash, always attached: a foil drifting after a fall can injure another rider.
• Clear zones, as a priority: wings are sharp, better to avoid crowded breaks or swimming zones when learning.
• A solid surfing level beforehand: takeoff on foil requires precise paddle timing, hard to improvise without a solid foundation.
