Today’s inflatable paddles market is highly diversified, with models to suit all levels, uses and budgets. There are stable, easy-to-handle inflatable stand-up paddles for beginners, top-of-the-range SUPs for touring or racing, and surf paddles for waves and technical gliding. Each board differs in length, width, thickness, type of reinforced PVC or drop stitch, as well as rigidity and stability.

2. Top 5 paddles for beginners

For beginners, we recommend stable paddles with a little less length. to increase manoeuvrability. The stability depends on board width. A wide board will be more stable. A paddle for beginners will be ideal for cruising.

What will make the difference between paddle brandsis the construction:

A paddle that is more reinforced and therefore more durable over time will be a little heavier because it will have a little more layers of PVC.
A very light paddle will be less strong. There’s a difference of 1kg.

The more reinforced the paddle, the stiffer and more stable it will be. Therefore it’s important to look at the number of layers, which can help you differentiate between constructions.

3. Top 4 racing paddles

A racing racing is necessarily long and narrow. The longer and narrower it is, the better its performance, with the downside of being less stable. You’ll need to be a good paddler to get the most out of this type of stand-up paddle.

A racing paddle ranges from 12’6 to 14 feet. The width will be less than 28 ‘wide. Once again, one of the keys to performance is rigidity. That’s why many competitors opt for rigid boards. But more and more competitors, for reasons of simplicity, prefer to use inflatable paddles.

We deliberately didn’t give any marks, as the race is very difficult to assess. There are so many factors involved that it’s difficult to be objective. 80% of the performance is the competitor and the rower on the board. So cardio, physical strength and explosiveness are such important criteria that they can skew a test.

4. Top 4 surf paddles

To surf an inflatable paddle, you need to choose the right one.

The shape is different, as is its thickness:

The outline of the board should be fairly round, with a narrowing at the front and back of the board to facilitate turns and prevent the nose from ploughing into the wave.
A thickness of 5′ (12 cm) is recommended, so that you can press down on the rails and turn the board more easily.
Similarly, the position and angle of the fins will influence the paddle’s manoeuvrability.
Finally, stiffness is a fundamental criterion if you hope to make real turns. If the board is made too light, it will bounce on the water with a significant loss of energy.

It’s essential to take the time to compare constructions. It’s best to invest in a good paddle for the waves.

5. Top 5 touring paddles

Going on a paddle hike is like going on an adventure with family or friends. Technically, all paddles can do this, but :

If you want to optimize your glide and your ride, we recommend boards with pointed noses for better gliding.
If you’re looking for stability, opt for a paddle with a pointed nose and a fairly wide stern to maximize your stability.
If you’re looking to maximize glide, opt for a long, thin board with a thin tail. This type of board will provide excellent glide, allowing you to go faster and cover more distance with less effort.

What is an inflatable paddle?

The inflatable paddlealso known as stand-up paddle or SUP, is an aquatic sport practiced on the sea, lake or river. Using a paddle, the paddler stands on a board and moves around using his or her paddle.

A complete paddle includes: board, fins, air pump, leash and carry bag. It can also be sold with or without a paddle. Rigid boards are still available, but inflatable boards are more common for reasons of simplicity, ease of use and sturdiness.

Stand Up Paddle (SUP): For whom and how?

Inflatable paddling is an activity accessible to all. From beginners to experts, there’s no age limit for taking to the water. It’s the ideal discipline for people who want to relax on the water and get away from the crowds.

There is no such thing as a “universal” paddle. To make sure you don’t make the wrong investment, take the technical specifications into account, as they can influence your experience:

Shape and length determine speed and manoeuvrability,
The construction has a direct impact on the responsiveness, rigidity and stability of your paddle,
Ailerons improve heading and directional stability.

Your choice of board will be radically different depending on your program. An “all-in-one” board is often a compromise that lacks efficiency. For optimum performance, refine your choice according to :
