Sardinia, a magnificent island ideal for wing sports foil

Sardinia, the jewel of the Mediterranean, offers an idyllic setting for wing enthusiasts foil. A cross between windsurfing and kitesurfing, this revolutionary discipline uses an inflatable wing and a sailboard to glide over the water (foil). Even in light winds, you’ll be able to explore the turquoise sea with equipment that’s easy to carry. Wing foil is the art of flying over the waves, a unique experience in the heart of sumptuous landscapes. Sardinia is a dream destination for Wing foil.

Popular Wing Foil spots in Sardinia

As Sardinia is an island, every nook and cranny and every stretch of beach can become a great spot for Wing foil. So we’re going to tell you about the island’s main spots.

1. The island of Sant’Antioco

The island of Sant’Antioco, located in south-west Sardinia, is one of the windiest places in the entire Mediterranean. Thanks to its geographical position, it enjoys Mistral and Scirocco winds almost all year round. It’s a strategic location for water sports enthusiasts such as windsurfers, kitesurfers and wingfoilers. The Sant’Antioco center is 2 km from the center of Sant’Antioco and 8 km from Calasetta. It offers courses for beginners and advanced.

The spot offers shallow, flat water and constant wind, ideal for an introduction to wingfoil.

You’ll easily find typical guest houses where you can enjoy a unique experience between sea, sun and wingfoil.

2. The Bouches de Bonifacio

The Bouches de Bonifacio, located in southern Corsica and northern Sardinia, is a famous wingfoil spot. The wind is very often present in an idyllic setting.

Ideal conditions: The westerly wind rushing into the Bouches de Bonifacio creates exceptional sailing conditions for wingfoil. The shallow waters and white sandy beaches make it a perfect place to practice wingfoil. Wing foil.

The easiest way to learn to wing foil, take a boat cruise on a catamaran and discover the multitude of islands and beaches on a cruise Wing with Foil explore Cruising for example.

3. Punta Trettu

Punta Trettu, located in the south-western part of Sardinia, overlooks the lagoon of the Gulf of Palmas. The region is renowned for its windy, sunny climate all year round. Historically, it has always been a fishing ground. Over the last ten years, however, it has become famous for wing foil, a revolutionary discipline halfway between windsurfing and kitesurfing. Wing foil redefines gravity with its infinite glides, enabling riders to navigate in very light wind scenarios. The essence of the sport lies in a wrist-mounted sail, with no helm or lines, and a board equipped with a large fin (foil). At Punta Trettu, thanks to its constant, taut winds, you’ll have the opportunity to learn wing foil in complete safety, with materials specially designed to make learning easier.

4. Porto Botte

Porto Botte, located between the municipalities of San Giovanni Sergiu and Giba, in the south-west region of Sardinia. This site offers two distinct kite spots:

Il Fortino: Continuing to the right once you reach the sea, you’ll discover this spot where the water is flat and deep. A local kite school runs this spot, offering a well-equipped kite center and an efficient rescue service in case of need.

The other side of Porto Botte: Continuing to the left, you reach the other side of Porto Botte. Here, the water is a little rougher and shallower, with a launching lane.

The Porto Botte kite spot is highly appreciated for its flat water and strong wind characteristics, making it an excellent place to learn kitesurfing and perfect your freestyle skills. The two spots inside the bay can safely accommodate a large number of kiters.

The wind blows all year round, increasing in intensity thanks to the thermal wind (from May to October) and the Venturi effect produced by the morphology of this stretch of coastline. In particular, the north-westerly wind, associated with sunshine or little cloud cover, blows 5 to 10 knots stronger than forecast.

What equipment should you take with you to Wing Foil in Sardinia?

Here is the wing foil equipment we recommend:

  • The north-westerly wind (Mistral), which predominates in Sardinia, blows hard and directly into the Gulf of Palmas, becoming increasingly intense due to the thermal wind and the “Venturi effect”.
  • The south-easterly wind (Scirocco), coming from the opposite direction, is a little gusty and sideways.
  • Westerly winds (Ponente) and southwesterly winds (Libeccio) blow well from spring to autumn, provided the skies are not too cloudy.
  • The northerly wind (tramontane) often blows hard and cold across the bay throughout the winter season (even at over 50 knots).

Wing size?

The wind in Sardinia can be very strong, so don’t forget the smallwing sizes foil for sailing in all conditions. A 5 m2 and a 3.4 will enable you to sail whatever the conditions.

The wing board foil?

If you’re traveling by plane, an inflatable wing foil board will allow you to take off without the risk of breaking your board during the trip. It will also fit easily into the trunk of your car.

The inflatable option is a really good opportunity for family courses.

Don’t forget

Remember to take a good sun cream with a high UV index, as sunburn can happen quickly in the wind. In Sardinia during the summer months, the water is relatively warm, so lycra may theoretically be sufficient, but with the wind, which can be strong, in wing foil a shorty may be recommended.

Sardinia is renowned for its quality winds, but also for its rich culture, history and picturesque landscapes! On a windless day (which is rare), or if you’re not into water sports, take the opportunity to explore the town, visit historic sites that trace the island’s history, or sample delicious Italian dishes before enjoying the excellent temperatures at the beach.
