Which pump foil board should you choose?

A pump foil board needs to be short, light and stiff. The lighter it is, the less energy you spend on every pump. The Pump Board 80 V2 is moulded in prepreg carbon and weighs 1.52 kg, making it one of the lightest production pump foil boards on the market for its size. Which foil should you choose for pumping?

The foil makes the difference in pump foiling. Two families, two uses.

To learn, the High Aspect 2000 front wing is the obvious choice. It lifts early, forgives placement errors and lets you learn to dock start without fighting your gear. It is the beginner pack wing, and it does that job perfectly.

The Pump Foil range is all about performance. It is designed for riders who already have foiling experience, from wing foiling, surf foiling or kitefoiling:

2200 cm²: the most accessible in the range, suited to riders coming from other foil sports, heavier riders and long sessions
1750 cm²: the all-rounder, the best balance of lift and glide, still manageable for an experienced rider who is new to pumping
1500 cm²: speed and distance, for experienced pumpers and lighter riders

These wings mount on a 70 or 85 cm S-Foil mast with the 56 fuselage and the 180 stabiliser. A short mast makes your first starts easier; a longer mast is more forgiving on touchdowns. All our pump foil front wings are interchangeable with the S-Foil range.

Complete foil or individual parts?

A complete foil guarantees compatibility between the front wing, mast, fuselage and stabiliser, at the best price. It includes the front wing of your choice, a 70 cm mast as standard (85 cm optional), the 56 fuselage, the 180 stabiliser and all hardware. If you already own an S-Foil mast, the board and wings are sold separately and mount straight on. The whole system is modular: as you progress, you change the front wing without changing the rest of the foil.

How do you learn to dock start?

For dock starts you need a compact, light and stiff board that launches easily off the dock and transfers every pump to the foil. The Pump Board 80 V2 is built for exactly that: 80 cm long, 39 cm wide, 6.2 L of volume and 1.52 kg on the scale. Its moulded prepreg carbon construction with carbon stringers gives consistent stiffness and direct transfer of every pump to the foil. The flat hull helps take-off, the front rocker forgives touchdowns, and the full-length grip keeps your feet in place as you land the jump. Its double carbon track accepts any foil with a plate mount.

Which foil should I choose for pump foiling and dock starts?

You need a front wing with plenty of lift and glide, so you can stay up easily and cover distance while pumping. Two options depending on your background:

The High Aspect 2000: 2000 cm², 140 cm span. This is the beginner pack wing. It lifts early, forgives placement errors and lets you start with no run-up, just by jumping onto the board.
The Pump Foil range in 1500, 1750 and 2200 cm²: a performance range for riders who already have foiling experience. The 2200 is the most accessible of the three; the 1500 is for experienced pumpers and lighter riders.

Rule of thumb: the bigger the surface, the easier the take-off and the more forgiving the wing. The smaller it is, the more speed and technique you need.

What makes a good dock start spot?

How do I dock start on a pump foil?

Take a few running steps along the dock holding the board (one or two are enough depending on the wing), then jump onto it. Some riders land the back foot first, others the front foot: it really comes down to personal preference. Pump hard as soon as you touch down to get up on the foil, then ease off once you are flying.

How much speed do I need for a dock start?

It depends on the wing. With the High Aspect 2000, the beginner pack wing, a simple jump off the dock is enough. The smaller the wing, like the Pump Foil 1500, the more run-up and technique you need to take off.
