The 8 best spots Wing Foil around Montpellier
Espiguette beach
The Espiguette beach is undoubtedly one of the best Wing Foil spots around Montpellier. Located just below Port Camargue, the Espiguette beach stretches for no less than 10 km. With its long stretch of fine sand, it is without doubt one of the most beautiful beaches in the region. It’s perfect for beginners and advanced alike. The wind is fairly steady. It’s generally southerly, south-westerly and north-westerly. There may be a few sandbanks further offshore, so make sure there’s always enough water for your foil.
Like most beaches in the south of France, Espiguette beach is very busy in summer. It can sometimes be difficult to find space. The advantage is that you don’t need much space to set up your wingfoil equipment.

Port Camargue – Plage Sud
La Plage Sud is probably the best Wingfoil spot around Montpellier in a tramontana wind (north-westerly wind). It’s also a very popular spot for kitesurfers. Wind conditions are ideal all year round, making it a very popular playground. It’s best to have an advanced level to ride on this spot. It can get very crowded in the water, but it’s a great place for both skilled and expert riders!
The beach is relatively easy to get to, thanks to the nearby parking lot.
Good to know: in summer, swimming areas are set up and the parking lot becomes chargeable (June to September).

Located 15 minutes from Montpellier, Le Boucanet is one of the best wing foil spots in the area. It’s an excellent spot in a westerly wind. It’s also possible to foil in a southerly wind. Depending on conditions, the Boucanet spot can be home to a few waves. A great place for free surfing or surf foil. Front fins like the 1350 High Aspect Lift are perfect for surfing foil or winging foil in light conditions, ideal for small summer waves without consistency. The plus? The length of the beach is perfect for downwind sailing!
Be careful, though, if you want to sail in complete peace and quiet. Le Boucanet is a very touristy beach, attracting large numbers of holidaymakers in the summer months.

Grand Travers Beach
The Grand Travers beach at La Grande-Motte is the ideal spot for start winging foil around Montpellier. Favorable winds on this beach are from the South, South-East and South-West. If the wind is from the south-east, the beach can even be transformed into a superb wave spot, providing great surfing fun foil! During the summer months, bathing zones are set up to separate swimmers from sailors and kitesurfers. It’s a great way to learn wing foil in total peace and quiet.

Carnon beaches
the beaches of Carnon near Montpellier are excellent wing spots foil when conditions are right. Favourable winds for foil are from the south and south-west. However, the winds can sometimes be very irregular. These spots are just as suitable for beginners as they are for experienced surfers when conditions are rougher. Carnon’s beaches are easy to get to, with plenty of parking nearby. Some beaches are closed to kitesurfing during the summer, such as the Roquilles spot. We therefore advise you to ask the locals about wing conditions foil before heading out.

Villeneuve-les-Maguelone
The Villeneuve-les-Maguelone spot is one of the most beautiful wing foil and kite surf spots in Montpellier. The beach stretches for around 8km and can be ridden in all wind conditions. The most common wind directions are south-westerly and north-westerly. Be careful with onshore winds, and don’t sail alone. On this spot, it’s best to know how to ride upwind to foil safely. Access is somewhat less easy than for the previous spots. There are two possibilities. You can park in the parking lot (paying from May to September) and walk the rest of the way. It’s about a 15-minute walk. Alternatively, a small train runs to the various beaches in summer.

Pontant pond
The advantage of a pond is that you can sail in virtually any wind condition. The best wind directions are south-easterly, south-westerly and north-westerly. North winds are not ideal for this pond. It’s the perfect spot to start wing foil around Montpellier. Experienced and expert wing flyers will also find something to suit them, depending on the conditions. It’s the meeting point for many foilers! There are lots of facebook groups where you can find out about spots and chat with other wingfoil enthusiasts in the Montpellier area.

Ingril pond
Situated 15 minutes from Montpellier, the Etang d’Ingril is the perfect learning spot. With its shallow, enclosed waters and low chop, it’s the perfect place to learn wingfoil in complete safety. The prevailing wind is north-westerly (tramontane), but as it’s a pond, you can also ride in westerly, north-easterly, easterly and south-westerly winds. It’s even possible to ride in a south-easterly wind, but you need to be careful, as in these conditions, the wind pushes you to the bottom of the pond. As the water level rises at the bottom of the pond, you quickly lose your footing, so you need to know how to get upwind if you choose to foil there with a south-easterly wind.
Pay attention to the depth of the water. After a few days of tramontana winds, the water level will drop and the foil may touch the bottom (algae and silt). That’s why, for this spot, we recommend a 65cm or 80cm maximum mast.
