A parawing foil is a hydrofoil specifically adapted to the mechanical constraints of soft-sail traction. Unlike a wing foil, which receives lateral traction, the parawing foil must handle more vertical and variable traction depending on gusts and sail movements. This leads to different design choices: a generally larger front surface to facilitate take-off at low speeds, and a fuselage designed to offer increased stability in the face of power variations.

The choice of size mainly depends on your weight, skill level, and the wind conditions at your spot. As a general rule, a large front wing between 1,500 and 2,000 cm² is suitable for beginners and lightweight riders looking to take off early and easily. An intermediate-sized wing between 1,000 and 1,500 cm² is ideal for intermediate riders who want to gain speed without sacrificing stability. For advanced riders seeking high performance, smaller, high-aspect wings offer greater speed and maneuverability.

The length of the mast directly influences your stability and sensations while flying. For beginners in parawing, a 60 to 70 cm mast is recommended: it offers a good balance between flight height and safety in case of a touch-down. Experienced riders prefer 75 to 90 cm masts to gain flight height and navigate in more challenging conditions. Mast stiffness also plays an important role: a carbon mast offers direct transmission of foot pressure, which is essential for precise steering.

The parawing foil reveals its full potential in steady and consistent wind conditions, between 15 and 25 knots depending on your size and the size of your sail. In light wind, a large front wing will partially compensate for the lack of power and facilitate take-off. In strong wind, a smaller wing will allow you to maintain control and fully exploit the speed. Wind consistency is often more important than its intensity for a comfortable flight.
