A Parawing flies thanks to lift. When wind passes over its profile, air accelerates on top and creates a depression that pulls the wing upward and forward. Lines connected to the bar keep it under tension, and you adjust its angle of attack in the wind to transform this lift into useful thrust.
Flying is just the beginning. A Parawing moves forward, accelerates, goes upwind, but can also stall or collapse. All of this stems from the same aerodynamic laws. Here, phenomenon by phenomenon, is what actually happens.

What Creates Lift?
Lift comes from the curved shape of the wing. Air flowing over the top moves faster and exerts less pressure than slower air below. This pressure difference generates a net force upward and forward. Another way to say it: the wing deflects air downward, and in reaction the air pushes the wing upward. Lift increases with surface area, angle of attack, profile thickness, and air speed.
Why Does It Also Generate Drag?
Drag is air resistance as the wing passes through. It has three sources: the shape of the wing, air friction on the fabric, and vortices created at the wing tip by the lift itself, called induced drag. Drag slows you down, but it is inseparable from lift: it is reduced with a thin profile and good aspect ratio, never eliminated.
Why Does a Parawing Move Forward?
Because lift is not just vertical: part of this force is directed forward. This component pulls you, and the Foil converts thrust into speed by eliminating water resistance under the board. A Parawing is not pushed by wind like a sail: it pulls, thanks to the lift of its profile.
Why Does It Accelerate?
When you sheet in or place the wing in the powerful zone of the wind window, angle of attack increases, lift rises, and thrust grows. The lifting Foil erases the drag from the hull. Apparent wind then strengthens with speed, which sustains acceleration: the faster you go, the more the wing is powered.
Why Does It Slow Down?
When drag exceeds thrust. By depowering, you reduce angle of attack and power. A wing beginning to collapse creates mainly drag. And if the Foil stalls at low speed, the hull drops into the water and slows you sharply.
Why Does It Go Upwind?
Because the wing's thrust is aimed slightly forward and the Foil prevents the board from slipping. Going upwind does not mean going directly into the wind, but advancing diagonally against it. Why Does Apparent Wind Change Everything?
At rest, you only feel true wind. As soon as you move forward, your speed creates a headwind that adds to true wind: this is apparent wind, stronger and more forward-oriented. It is what makes the Parawing move forward, even when true wind weakens, and this is why you must sheet in the wing forward as you accelerate.
Why Does a Parawing Stall?
When the angle between the wing and wind becomes too large. Air no longer follows the profile, separates, lift drops sharply, and the wing falls. This limiting angle is called the stall angle. In Parawing, this often happens by pulling too hard on the bar or losing line tension.
Why Does a Parawing Collapse?
When it loses internal tension and its leading edge folds. A Parawing is a soft wing that holds its shape thanks to wind that pressurizes it and its bridle. If tension drops, during a gust that fades or a sudden movement, the leading edge collapses and the wing closes. The tips, the ears, are affected first.
Can You Reduce Lift Without Deforming the Wing?
This is the whole point of power management systems. On a fixed-geometry wing, reducing power means changing angle of attack: the wing moves back in the flight window and your heading degrades. Some designs instead act on the wing's geometry itself to reduce the lifting surface without affecting angle of attack. Does a Parawing fly without wind?
No. Without air flow over the profile, there is no lift. True wind, or your forward motion once launched, is essential.
Do you need strong wind for a Parawing to fly?
No. Takeoff requires a minimum wind, but once the Foil is launched, apparent wind takes over and the wing continues to pull, even in moderate wind.
Does a light Parawing fly better?
In light wind, yes. The lighter the wing, the less lift is needed to support it. A lightweight, water-resistant material takes off earlier and stays performant even after water contact.
Can you go directly into the wind?
No. No wing progresses directly into the wind. You advance at an angle, then chain tacks to gain upwind.
Why does a Parawing sometimes fall?
Because air no longer flows correctly over the profile: angle of attack too shallow or too steep, loss of line tension, or wind too light.
What is the difference between a Parawing and a Wing foil?
A Parawing is controlled via lines attached to a bar, like a kite. A Wing foil is held in your hands thanks to an inflatable canopy. Both create lift, but their handling differs.
