Coming from Kitesurfing? Here's what transfers to Parawing, what really changes on the water, the equipment and the right size to get started fast.

    In brief. If you're coming from kitesurfing, switching to parawing isn't starting from scratch. You keep the essentials: reading the wind, understanding the wind window, sensing traction, and part of bar control. What really changes is the takeoff, your relationship with power, and the equipment. In kite, you start being towed on long lines, around 23 m. In Parawing, you take off standing on the board with very short lines, 1.38 m on a 3 m to 1.80 m on a 5 m, before recovering the wing once airborne on the Foil.

    Parawing is attracting more and more riders from kite because it keeps a familiar sense of traction while simplifying logistics. The wing deploys from a pocket, is piloted by a bar, and recovers quickly once launched. For practitioners focused on Downwind, Surf foil, or travel, it opens new possibilities without the clutter of a classic kite quiver.

    Parawing doesn't replace kitesurfing: it serves another purpose. Kite remains broader in wind range and more versatile on many spots.     What transfers from kitesurfing to Parawing

    When you come from kite, you arrive with a real advantage. The most important is already built in: observing the wind, feeling where the power sits, understanding wing placement, and reacting quickly to traction. This foundation significantly accelerates your early sessions.

    What really changes on the water

    The first change is takeoff. In kite, traction from long lines creates a very identifiable waterstart.     The second change is your relationship with the wing. With short lines, everything becomes more direct and reactions are more immediate. Hand position depends a lot on design: on a Parawing without PushBar System®, which is the case for nearly the entire market, hands stay far forward on the bar. With PushBar System®, they're balanced, like in kite.

    The third point is the usage range. Kite generally retains a broader amplitude, especially in strong wind. In Parawing, power management becomes a central criterion, particularly for expanding the high range and maintaining comfort.

    Do you already need to know how to Foil?

    Yes, it's often the real prerequisite. Knowing how to kite helps a lot, but knowing how to Foil helps even more. A rider already comfortable in kitefoil, Wingfoil, or Surf foil will understand takeoffs, pressure, and timing faster. Conversely, a very good kiter without Foil experience will first need to master flight.

    What equipment to transition from kitesurfing to Parawing?

    If you're coming from kite, you already have part of the gear knowledge, but not necessarily the right equipment. The transition mainly requires a suitable wing, a capable Foil, a board with enough volume to launch easily, and a Harness if you want to relieve your arms.

    • A Parawing adapted to your spot and your size. See models on the SROKA Parawing collection.
    • A Foil with enough surface. A kitefoil is often too small and too fast for comfortable learning. To start, aim for 1,300 to 1,500 cm² with high aspect ratio, in the UHA range: this aspect ratio maximizes both lift and glide. Full details in which Foil to choose for Parawing.
    • A board with volume, Wingfoil or Downwind type, to ease takeoff.
    • A Harness, which remains relevant if you want to sail more relaxed. Your kite Harness works, even though a Parawing Harness with Kangaroo Pocket is more suitable.

    What Parawing size to choose when coming from kite?

    A kiter already thinks in square meters, knots, and wind range. That's a useful reference, as long as you remember that a Parawing doesn't pilot exactly like a kite. Here's the sizing guide for FYNIX, measured on an 80 kg rider with a UHA 1100 to 1260 Foil and a LW Mid 90 L board, adjusting Foil and board size:

    Yes, that's generally the main prerequisite. If you already kitefoil, the transition is significantly faster.

    Does Parawing replace kitesurfing?

    No. It complements kite rather, with particular interest in Foil, Downwind, and light practices.

    Does my kite Harness work for Parawing?

    Yes, in many cases. It can help relieve your arms depending on navigation type and wing used. A Parawing Harness with Kangaroo Pocket remains more suitable because it also stores the wing.

    Is my kitefoil Foil suitable?

    Not always. Kitefoils are often smaller and faster than what's comfortable for starting in Parawing. Aim instead for 1,300 to 1,500 cm² with high aspect ratio.

    How many sessions to become independent?

    For a rider already skilled in Foil, a few sessions can be enough to master basics. Without Foil experience, the learning curve is longer.

    Does Parawing last as long as kite in strong wind?

    Generally not: kite often maintains a wider high range. That's precisely where power management quality becomes important.

    What's the line length difference between kite and Parawing?

    That's the most striking gap: around 23 m in kite, versus 1.38 m on a 3 m Parawing and 1.80 m on a 5 m. All piloting flows from this, with much more direct and immediate reactions.
