How to get started in Parawing? The complete guide

    In a nutshell: to get started with Parawing, aim for 15 to 20 knots of regular wind, a mid-length board of 110 to 120 liters, a UHA foil of 1,300 to 1,500 cm² and a wing of 4 or 5 m². Beginners' difficulties almost always come from equipment that's too small or wind that's too weak, not from the discipline itself.

    Parawing, also called pocket wing or soft wing, is experiencing spectacular growth. Wingfoilers, downwind enthusiasts, kitesurfers seeking new sensations, Pumping foil practitioners: more and more riders want to discover this discipline.

    Yet one question keeps coming up systematically: how can you get started without wasting time or making repeated mistakes?

    Good news: Parawing is far more accessible than it appears. In the vast majority of cases, beginners' difficulties don't come from the discipline itself, but from inadequate equipment or unfavorable learning conditions.

    After more than twenty years spent designing, testing and developing foil equipment and coaching riders of all levels, I'm convinced: with the right equipment and logical progression, you learn quickly, and you have fun from the first sessions.

    Can you start directly with Parawing?

    Yes. But let's be honest: prior foil experience makes learning significantly easier. A rider who already masters Wing foil, SUP foil, Surf foil or Pumping foil will progress faster because they already understand the basics of flight and balance on a foil.

    It's still entirely possible to start directly with Parawing, as long as you use appropriate equipment and follow a clear progression.

    The profiles discovering Parawing today

    The Wingfoiler already masters foil and wind management. They mainly need to learn to pilot a different wing, with less consistent traction than wing foil.

    The Downwinder knows how to read the swell and flight techniques. Parawing becomes a simple and effective way for them to launch their runs.

    The Surf foil rider often has excellent foil control but needs to learn how to manage wing power.

    The Kitesurfer is comfortable with the wind window, apparent wind and power management. Parawing opens up new spots for them, or areas where Kitesurfing becomes more complex or more regulated.

    The Pumping foil practitioner uses Parawing to facilitate takeoff, before continuing with pumping or bump connections.

    The number one tip for successful first sessions

    If I had to give just one piece of advice to someone who wants to get started, it would be this: aim for a day with at least 15 knots (kts) of regular wind.

    This may seem counterintuitive, but a bit more wind makes learning easier. In wind that's too light:

    • the wing flies less easily;
    • relaunches are more complicated;
    • takeoff becomes more technical;
    • mistakes are less forgiving.

    With 15 to 20 knots (kts) of regular wind, the wing stays in the air effortlessly. The rider can focus on their balance and movement, instead of constantly struggling to keep it airborne.     What equipment to choose to get started?

    The most common mistake is trying to use equipment that's too high-performance or too radical from the start. To progress quickly, you should instead prioritize ease of use. Here are the key points for a good start; for complete and final choice, see our dedicated guides.

    The board

    For a rider weighing around 80 kg who's truly starting out, a mid-length board remains often the best choice: a volume of 110 to 120 liters, a length over 6'5 and a width of 22 to 25 inches depending on level. A more stable board lets you focus on the wing and greatly reduces fatigue and imbalance during learning. If you're aiming for Light wind or Downwind, a dedicated Downwind board makes all the difference at takeoff.

    The foil

    The foil plays a crucial role. To get started, aim for a foil from the UHA range, between 1,300 and 1,500 cm²: this aspect ratio maximizes both lift, to take off early and at low speed, and glide once you're going.     What size Parawing to choose to get started?

    The answer depends on the rider's weight and conditions. However, two sizes stand out most often: a 4 m², the most versatile, which covers a wide range of conditions while remaining easy to control, and a 5 m², which provides more power and easier takeoffs in light conditions, often the best choice for maximum ease during first sessions.     The harness

    Mistakes that slow down progression

    Most difficulties encountered by beginners come from the same mistakes.

    A board that's too small

    This is probably mistake number one. The rider spends all their time finding their balance instead of learning to control their wing.

    A foil that's too small

    A foil that's too fast or too small requires more speed to take off. The rider must then generate more power with the wing, which unnecessarily complicates learning.

    Wind that's too weak

    Many beginners think you need little wind to learn. In reality, a wing that doesn't fly properly makes everything harder.

    Wanting to under-size

    Another common mistake: choosing a wing that's too small thinking it will be easier. Lack of power reduces available push and complicates balance on the board. Better to have a wing that stays in the air than a wing you're struggling with.

    Steps to learn Parawing

    Step 1: understand wing handling on land

    Before going on the water, it's useful to get familiar with the wing. The goal is simple:

    • understand the wind window
    • learn how to turn the wing
    • feel the power
    • anticipate wing reactions
    • learn to untangle lines

    This last point matters more than it seems: untangling lines on dry land is much simpler than in the water, where the exercise quickly becomes tedious. Regular wind also greatly facilitates this phase.

    Step 2: make the wing fly on the water and get back on the board

    Once on the water, the goal isn't yet to fly, but to learn how to make the wing take off, keep it stable, get back on the board and go again after a fall. This step is often underestimated, even though it represents a significant part of learning. The more natural it becomes, the faster progression accelerates.     Step 3: sail stable runs

    Before trying to fly, you must learn to navigate. The goal: take off, move forward, return to your starting point. At this stage, stability trumps performance.

    Step 4: achieve first flights

    Once movements are mastered, comes the moment of takeoff. This phase requires coordinating wing power, board push and foil function. First flights are short, but they quickly help you understand the mechanics of flight.

    Step 5: manage gusts and control power

    When first flights become regular, you need to learn to manage wind variations. Knowing how to modulate power greatly improves comfort and safety.

    Turns mark a new stage. Common mistake: engage the turn before repositioning the wing. Better to start turning the wing before actually changing direction, to maintain line tension and keep power.

    Do you need to know how to fold your Parawing to get started?

    Not necessarily. First sessions should focus on wing control, stability, first runs and first flights. Wing folding and wave exploitation will come naturally in a second phase.

    When to move on to Downwind?

    Many practitioners want to immediately string together Downwinds. However, it's better to have validated several steps: taking off regularly, returning to your starting point, managing gusts, nailing first turns and controlling your wing without thinking about it constantly.
