In brief. There is no single number. The minimum wind depends on your weight, your wing size, your Foil, your board, your technique and your level. For an 80 kg rider with an early-launch setup, a 5 m takes off from around 8 Knots, a 4 m from around 13 Knots, a 3 m from around 20 Knots. For pure light wind around 8 Knots, aim for a 5 or a 6 m. And the real hard point is not the flight: it's the Takeoff.
Today, I navigated in Parawing at 8 Knots. A 5 m, a lifting Foil of 1500 cm², a Downwind board 7'2, and I was the only one on the water flying. That's the whole point of this article: contrary to a persistent idea, Parawing is not reserved for strong wind. With the right equipment and the right technique, you launch much earlier than what you read everywhere.

The true minimum depends on your setup, not just the wind
The "from how many Knots" has no universal answer. At equal weight, two riders don't have the same floor depending on their wing, their Foil, their board and their level. Here are my real benchmarks, at 80 kg, with equipment designed for early launch.

These figures are mine, at my level, with a setup tailored for light wind. The floor also depends heavily on your level: the more you master Pumping and gliding, the earlier you launch. On a 5 m at 80 kg, here are the realistic benchmarks.

Making the Parawing fly and taking off on Foil: two different things
That's confusion number one in light wind. Making the wing fly and taking off on Foil don't require the same energy at all. A Parawing can perfectly stay in the air when there isn't yet enough wind to make you take off. Hence the phrase you hear all the time: "my wing flies perfectly, but I can't take off on Foil". The problem doesn't come from the wing. The wind is enough to keep it in flight, but not yet to accelerate the whole system.
A physical concept clarifies everything: water is approximately 800 times denser than air. Making a wing fly in the air requires much less energy than accelerating a board and a Foil in water to takeoff speed. Here are the benchmarks, for an 80 kg rider with a 5 m, a board around 115 L and a lifting Foil of 1500 cm²:
- Making the Parawing fly: from 6 to 8 Knots
- Takeoff possible: around 10 Knots
- Comfortable takeoff: 12 Knots
- Easy navigation: 15 Knots
- Ideal conditions for beginners: 15 Knots and above

Why 15 Knots are often easier than 10
It's surprising, but when you start out, seeking the lightest wind possible is often counterproductive. In very light wind, everything becomes more technical: the wing requires more attention to stay in flight, mistakes are less forgivable, and you have to manage wing stability, board balance, Pumping and Foil acceleration at the same time.
In 15 Knots of regular wind, on the other hand, the Parawing flies more easily, takeoffs require less energy, mistakes are corrected, retakeoffs are simple and the footwork is clear. Many riders actually progress faster in moderate wind than in marginal conditions. The right question isn't "how low can I go", but "in what conditions will I progress the fastest". The technique for early takeoff (my method at 8 Knots)
The key is not to try to rip the takeoff with the wing's power. You build speed with the board, then trigger. Here's exactly what I did today.
- Make the board glide first. I use the glide of the long board to build speed on the water, without forcing on the wing. It's the board that does the acceleration work.
- Pump with the board once launched. When I have enough speed, I pump with the board to generate power and take off cleanly. Not a soft takeoff, a real launch.
The order matters: speed first, Pump second. If you pull on the wing from the start, you'll never have enough power in the light wind and you'll exhaust yourself. The board's glide is your engine, the Pump is the trigger.
The equipment that pushes back your floor

The Foil, often more decisive than the wing
The first reflex to launch earlier is to enlarge the wing. But it's often the Foil that sets the necessary takeoff speed. Two 1500 cm² Foils can behave oppositely: a lifting profile, thicker, takes off earlier and flies at low speed, ideal for light wind; a speed-oriented profile glides better once launched but requires more speed to take off. The board, the underestimated lever
The board directly influences your low range, and not just by its Volume. Length brings glide and easier acceleration, hence the success of Mid-length in Parawing. Width brings stability at launch. Volume brings buoyancy and forgives mistakes. A detail often forgotten: salt water is denser than fresh water, so with equal equipment you take off a bit more easily in the sea than in a lake, where you'd better keep Volume.
A concrete example, for an 80 kg rider at equal level, same wing, same Foil: a 115 L board at 7'2 versus a shorter 85 L board can allow you to take off up to 5 Knots earlier. That's considerable. A long and gliding board, like a Downwind board 7'2, gives you the takeoff speed; a short board will cost you several Knots of floor.
The wing, the largest in your quiver
The larger the surface, the earlier the launch. At 80 kg, the 5 m is the light reference, and the 6 m makes the same 8 Knots takeoff easier, with less effort. Freeride and Downwind don't demand the same conditions
Once takeoff is acquired, you often think all practices become possible. Wrong. In Freeride, the goal is to take off, carve some turns and enjoy the flight: 10 to 12 Knots can already give great sessions with the right equipment. Downwind exploits the energy of the water surface, the bumps and swell trains. But for these reliefs to form, the wind must push hard enough and long enough on the surface. At 10 Knots, you can take off, but the wind doesn't yet generate enough energy in the water to create exploitable bumps. There may be enough wind to fly the rider, not enough to make Downwind work. The PushBar System® in light wind: what it does, and what it doesn't
Let's be honest, that's what makes it credible: at 8 Knots, in the takeoff phase, the PushBar System® doesn't help you. In light wind, you want all available power, especially not to reduce it. Early takeoff in light remains a matter of technique and good equipment.

The most common mistakes in light wind
Choosing a Foil that's too small. Mistake number one. A small Foil requires more speed to take off. In light wind, prioritize a lifting Foil before reducing surface as your level goes up.
Choosing a board that's too small. Pleasant in established conditions, but in light wind it complicates stability, acceleration and launch. A longer and larger Volume board can make you take off up to 5 Knots earlier.
Copying expert equipment. An experienced rider compensates with technique and timing. His small wing, small Foil and compact board become much more demanding for an intermediate rider.
Absolutely seeking the minimum wind. A regular 15 Knots is more educational than a marginal 10 Knots.
Believing that wing size solves everything. Enlarging helps, but never replaces an adapted Foil, adapted board and good technique.
What to take away
Parawing is not a strong wind machine. At 80 kg, a 5 m flies from 8 Knots with a lifting Foil and a long board: I've proven it, alone on the water. Light wind is not a wall, it's a takeoff that requires glide, Pump at the right moment and the right equipment. Once in the air, the pleasure is intact. But don't seek the lightest wind to learn: seek the right balance between wind, Foil, board and level.

A Parawing can fly from 6 to 8 Knots, but Foil takeoff requires rather 10 to 12 Knots depending on setup and level. By level on a 5 m at 80 kg: an expert launches at 8-10 Knots, an intermediate around 12, a beginner around 15.
Why does my wing fly but I can't take off?
Because making the wing fly and taking off on Foil are two different things. Takeoff requires accelerating the rider, board and Foil in water, 800 times denser than air. A Foil that's too small or a board that's too compact complicate this launch even when the wing flies well.
What size Parawing for light wind?
A 5 or a 6 m. At 80 kg, the 5 m is the reference for taking off around 8 Knots, and the 6 m makes this takeoff even easier. The larger the surface, the earlier you launch. Pair it with a lifting Foil and a long board.
Which Foil to take off early in Parawing in light wind?
A lifting Foil, generous in surface, around 1500 cm². It generates lift at low speed and significantly lowers minimum takeoff wind. Profile counts as much as surface: two 1500 cm² Foils can take off in very different winds.
What is the minimum wind for Downwind in Parawing?
Generally around 15 Knots. Below that, the wind doesn't generate enough energy in the water to create exploitable bumps. You can take off and navigate, but connecting the undulations becomes very difficult.
Does the PushBar System® help you take off in light wind?
Not on takeoff: in light wind, you want all the power. It serves once in flight, to regulate power (absorb a gust, dose in light wind) and widen the useful window of the wing when wind picks up.
Why do two riders get different results in the same wind?
Because takeoff also depends on level, timing and explosiveness. In light wind, an experienced rider takes off earlier than a less technical rider. Equipment is not the only factor.
