    Getting back on your board after a fall, the Parawing waterstart, is the first real challenge for a Beginner. On paper it's simple: you fall, you recover the board, you get up, you restart. In the water, you have to manage the wing, the lines, the board, the foil, the wind and your body orientation all at once. That's when everything goes wrong.

    The real difficulty is not getting back on the board: it's putting the system back in order before getting up. In Parawing, you never get up by force or in a rush. You get up methodically, in the right order, with a stable wing and a properly oriented board.

    The 6-step method (to remember)

    1. Stay calm. Don't try to restart quickly. A few seconds to put things back in order saves you several minutes untangling.
    2. Reduce wing power. Push the bar to bring it to the edge of the wind window (with the PushBar System®) or control it with one hand without pulling on it.
    3. Check that the lines are clear. No line should pass around the foil, the mast, the stabilizer or under the board.
    4. Recover the board and orient it across the wind. Never in line with the wind.
    5. Position yourself downwind, legs away from the foil.
    6. Get up calmly, with a stable wing, leaning on the board, not the wing. You only take off again when everything is clear.

    Why is it difficult in Parawing?

    The Parawing waterstart is nothing like a simple foil restart. You're not just getting back on the board. You also control a wing connected by lines, you avoid the foil, you manage the traction and you maintain good orientation relative to the wind. Three situations come up repeatedly, and each requires a different reaction.

    The wing stays in the air

    This is the most favorable case. If the wind is sufficient and steady, the wing stays stable above the water and you can focus on the board. One rule only: it must never stay at full power. If it pulls too much, you'll get knocked off balance as soon as you get up. And the more you pull on it to stabilize yourself, the more you load it, the more you fall back in. Reduce the traction first.

    The wing falls in the water

    Many try to get it airborne right away. That's a mistake: from the water, relaunching a Parawing properly is very difficult, if not impossible. You lack support, the board moves, the lines go slack, the wing sticks to the surface. The priority is to get back on the board first: you'll find a stable position and real support to manage the wing afterward.

    Lines pass around the board or foil

    This is the trickiest situation. A line wrapped around the foil, the mast or the stabilizer can block the wing, create unpredictable traction and make relaunching impossible.     The golden rule: put things in order before getting up

    You don't get on the board until the wing, lines and board are under control. This logic avoids the vast majority of mistakes. Two points deserve explanation, because they're what make the difference.

    Why orient the board across the wind?

    If the board lines up with the wind, it drifts with the wind: it drifts fast, becomes hard to hold and pulls you into a bad position. Across the wind, it offers more resistance, drifts less and stays stable while you get up. If it's badly oriented, reposition it before getting on; not after.

    Why position yourself downwind?

    Downwind, you control the board better, you reduce the risk of lines passing around the foil and you maintain good awareness of the wing and traction. Always stay alert to the foil: never put your legs near the front wing, mast or stabilizer. The foil is sharp and becomes dangerous as soon as you rush or position yourself wrong.

    The get-up movement, step by step

    Once the wing is calm and the board is across the wind, the movement is simple if you break it down. Approach the board from the downwind side and hoist yourself onto it by grabbing the opposite rail.

    1. Unhook from your harness, then go to your knees, slightly behind the center of the board, the wing held stable at the edge of the wind window or above your head (at the zenith).
    2. When you're balanced, bring the wing above you and gently engage the power.
    3. Place your front foot, push on this leg to stand up, then place your back foot above the foil mast.

    The wing is there to pull you, not as a handle to hoist yourself up. If you pull on it to get up, you load it, you lose your balance and you go back in the water. Lean on the board, keep the wing clean, and let speed do the rest.

    Get up with the PushBar System® (FYNIX)

    With a Parawing equipped with a true dynamic depower-power system like the FYNIX and its PushBar System®, this phase becomes much simpler (provided there's enough wind and the wing hasn't fallen in the water).

    The principle: you reduce power before getting up. You push on the bar, the lines slide inside the 32 cm carbon bar, the wing goes to the edge of the wind window, it pulls much less and stays stable. You can then focus on the board without getting yanked. Concretely:

    • stay hooked to your harness;
    • push on the bar to reduce power;
    • let the wing position itself at the edge of the wind window;
    • recover the board and orient it across the wind;
    • position yourself downwind;
    • use both hands to get up.

    The big advantage: the wing stays stable and you free up both hands. Yet the Beginner almost always needs both hands to grab the board, stabilize and get up properly.     The only limit is lack of wind, not excess. If there's too little air, the wing loses stability, descends and falls in the water. The PBS facilitates the getup but doesn't replace the wind.     Get up without power management system

    Without a dynamic depower-power system, the getup requires more coordination, because you can't unload the wing as easily: it demands attention constantly.

    You stay on your harness and you control the Parawing with one hand only, the one farthest from the board. Your other hand, the closest one, grabs the rail, stabilizes the board and helps you get up.     The classic trap: pulling on the wing to hoist yourself up. By pulling, you increase power, you move the wing and you lose your balance. Be gentle on your supports, keep the wing stable and use the board as your main support. It's more technical than with a PBS, but the logic remains the same: calm wing, board across the wind, getup without force.

    What to do if the wing has fallen in the water?

    We repeat this because it's the most costly reflex: don't try to relaunch the wing first. From the water, you have neither the support nor the stability to do it properly. The order that works:

    1. stay calm;
    2. recover the board;
    3. orient it across the wind;
    4. get up on the board;
    5. relaunch the wing afterward.

    On the board, you're higher, more stable, better oriented: you manage line tension and reposition the wing much more easily than from the water. Even when the wing is flat, the board's orientation matters: put it back across the wind before getting up, so it drifts less and gives you solid support.

    Common mistakes

    Trying to get up too quickly

    Mistake #1. You fall, you want to restart right away, you get up before you've stabilized: board badly oriented, wing pulling, lines around the foil, and you fall back in. Take a few seconds to put things in order. The goal is not to get up fast, but in the right order.

    Keeping the wing at full power

    A wing at full power knocks you off balance as soon as you get up, especially on an unstable board. Reduce traction first: at the bar with a PBS, with one hand with finesse without a system.

    Pulling on the wing to balance

    Bad automatic reflex. Pulling on the Parawing increases power and knocks you off balance. The wing stays controlled but never becomes the handle you hoist yourself up with. The support is the board.

    Getting up with a badly oriented board

    In line with the wind, the board drifts with the wind and becomes impossible to hold. Across the wind, it resists, locks and drifts less. Reposition it before getting up.

    Positioning yourself wrong and leaving lines near the foil

    Badly positioned, you lose control of the board, you interfere with the lines and you get closer to the foil. Stay downwind, legs away from the front wing, mast and stabilizer, and always maintain clear lines. In light wind, add finesse: the wing is less stable, the slightest abrupt movement sends it into the water.

    What conditions make the getup easier?

    Many want to learn in the lightest possible wind, thinking it's more reassuring. It's often the opposite: in too-light wind, the Parawing becomes unstable, the lines go slack and the wing falls in the water more easily. To learn, choose established and steady conditions.

    Ideal wind: around 15 knots

    At 15 regular knots, the wing flies easily, stays stable and responds better.     The right board to get started

    The board changes everything: after a fall, the right board quickly gives you stable support. To learn, prioritize volume, width, stability and a length that provides glide. A board that's too small, too narrow or too compact makes the getup harder: less stability, less margin, more balance required.
