Why can't I get airborne in parawing?

Can't get airborne in parawing? Nine times out of ten, it's not a matter of talent but of undersized equipment and disorganized pumping. The complete diagnosis, cause by cause, by Bruno Sroka.

    In brief. If you can't take off on a Parawing, the cause is almost always one of these six: not enough power (wrong wing size or wind too weak), a foil that lacks lift, a board that's too small, Pumping done in the wrong order, a wing poorly positioned in the wind window, or feet mispositioned. To learn, aim for 15 knots (kts), a lifting foil around 1500 cm² and a Downwind board with at least 20 liters above your weight.

    Takeoff is the first wall of Parawing. And nine times out of ten, if you can't do it, it's not a matter of talent: it's a combination of simple causes, almost always the same. Here's how to diagnose them one by one and correct them.

    You lack power (it's the main cause)

    The symptom is clear: you have no power in your hands and you can't accelerate. You're underpowered. Conversely, if you're overpowered, the wing unbalances you and prevents you from managing your takeoff. In both cases, the problem is the same: the power is not at the right level. And on a classic Parawing, you can't regulate it, so everything comes down to the size you choose.

    To start, aim ideally for 15 knots (kts): that's when takeoff becomes accessible. An expert can depart much earlier, around 8 knots (kts), but only with a large foil, a large board and solid technique.     Your foil doesn't have enough lift

    If the wing pulls but the board doesn't plane and the foil refuses to lift, your foil lacks lift. It's one of the most frequent causes among those who start with equipment that's too small.

    To take off easily, a lifting foil changes everything: around 1500 cm², combined with a board that takes off early and a 5 m wing, a good practitioner takes off from 10 to 13 knots (kts).     Your board is too small or not stable enough

    If you fall before you've even started your Pumping, your board is too small or not stable enough. It's impossible to Pump properly when you're struggling to stay upright.

    Take at least 20 liters above your weight, on a Downwind-type board. And pay attention to a detail that many forget: on a lake, in fresh water, take 30 to 40 liters more, because fresh water carries less than salt water.

    Also think about wind density, a parameter that almost no one takes into account. A mountain lake wind carries less because it's less dense. And at equal force, a dry south of France wind pushes less than a Brittany wind laden with moisture. The denser the air, the more power it has, and the easier you take off.

    Your Pumping is not in the right order

    That's often where everything comes down to. Pumping follows a precise order, and if you reverse the steps, you never accelerate enough. In light wind especially, follow this sequence:

    1. First, generate power by Pumping the wing with the wind.
    2. When you feel enough power, add a board stroke with each wing stroke. You synchronize the two.
    3. As soon as you have enough speed, push hard on your back foot. You take off, and you're on your way.

    Power first, speed second, takeoff last. This order is non-negotiable.

    Your wing is poorly positioned in the wind window

    Two mistakes come up all the time. The first: you place your wing too high in the wind window. The second, more insidious: the wing moves back in the window every time you try to take off. It almost always comes from the positioning of your hands on the bar.

    Keep the wing in the right place and take care of your hand position so it doesn't move back. In terms of direction, don't depart downwind: you'd have too much power in the wing and you'd take off poorly. Depart slightly reaching, barely bearing away.     Your position on the board unbalances you

    In chop, mispositioned feet are enough to unbalance you before even takeoff.

    Place your front foot a little closer to the windward rail, and your back foot a little closer to the leeward rail. This position stabilizes you on the board and lets you Pump properly.

    Choose the right spot to learn

    For your first takeoffs, choose flat water: it's the best way to understand how everything works. Keep space downwind so you're not rushed. The tide has no importance here.
