Where to go Wing Foil in Martinique?

Martinique, a paradise for wing foiling?

Martinique, a French island in the Caribbean, is a true tropical gem. Nestled in the heart of the Lesser Antilles, it offers a paradisiacal setting with its fine sandy beaches, crystal clear waters and lush vegetation. But beyond its idyllic landscapes, Martinique is also a privileged playground for water sports enthusiasts. Among them, wing foiling stands out.

This discipline combines the glide of surfing, the power of kite and the lightness of foil. Imagine yourself soaring above the water, propelled by the wind, in an enchanting setting. Martinique, with its adapted spots and tropical climate, is the perfect place to learn or improve your skills in this unique discipline.

The most beautiful Wing Foil spots in Martinique

1. The Vauclin

The Vauclin is an excellent spot for wing foiling in Martinique. It offers warm waters and a steady trade wind, ideal for learning and progressing. The spot at Pointe Faula is particularly suitable. You will find a flat and sandy bottom, a wide body of water accessible to all levels. The UCPA offers a one-week course in Vauclin, with 10 wingfoil sessions supervised by an instructor. This is an ideal opportunity for people who already have experience in water sports. For dining, I recommend Chez Henri, located on the Route des Salines, where you can enjoy delicious French and Caribbean cuisine.

2. Anse Michel

Anse Michel is another popular spot for wing foiling in Martinique. Its wind is rather onshore, which allows you to sail comfortably. For dining, Le Cocotier is a recommended restaurant, offering a magnificent view of the beach.

3. Sainte-Anne (The Bay of the English):

Sainte-Anne offers several varied spots for wing foiling. Anse du Belley is adapted to sustained trade winds. You can also explore Les Trois-Îlets on the west coast. Watch out for obstacles at sea. For dining, Chez Nadiege et Serge is a restaurant appreciated for its local dishes and its friendly atmosphere.

4. Cape Knight:

For Cap Chevalier, I haven’t found a specific wingfoil school, but you can explore the other spots mentioned above. For food, try Le Beach Resto Des Salines or Le Panier à Salade in Sainte-Anne, which are close to Cap Chevalier.

The particularities of Martinique for Wing Foil

Martinique benefits from the trade wind, which blows from the northeast. This trade wind is regular and mild, providing ideal conditions for safe wing foiling.

The trade wind period runs from December to July. This is the best season to practice wing foiling in Martinique. Air and sea temperatures are pleasant, reaching around 27°C during the windy period (December to April).

The most famous spots are on the south Atlantic coast, between the Vauclin and Anse Michel, as well as on Sainte-Anne. The wind is side-onshore, which allows you to sail comfortably. The water is generally flat to choppy. Sail in a swimsuit in a paradisiacal lagoon, it’s just an exceptional memory.

From beginner to expert, Martinique will be a perfect destination for wing foiling

There is something for all levels, from beginner to expert you can find a sport at your level and your needs. In some lagoons you have your feet very far away, which allows you to reassure yourself and rest if necessary in complete safety.

There are different wing foil schools in Martinique. You will find state certificates that allow you to start and progress in wing foiling.

Remember to equip yourself with your wing foil pack before you leave. If necessary, schools can provide you with the equipment.

What to do if the conditions are not right?

If the wind is not present, you can discover the jewels of Martinique. It is one of the jewels of the French West Indies. It offers a heavenly setting for wingfoil enthusiasts. Beyond board sports, the island is full of activities to discover. Here’s what you can do next to wingfoiling:

4x4 excursions

Explore the north of the island through the cane fields and learn about banana farming. Your guide will reveal the secrets of the “sugar stick”. Don’t miss a visit to a banana plantation in Saint-Joseph.

Visit the La Mauny distillery in Rivière-Pilote

In the south, visit the La Mauny distillery in Rivière-Pilote to learn about the steps involved in making rum. After a Creole or lobster lunch by the sea in Sainte-Anne, relax on the islet of Chevalier, accessible by traditional boat.

Boat trips

Discover Le François by boat, explore the white seabed and observe dolphins and turtles.

Opt for a crossing to the islet of Chevalier, where you can swim and relax in an idyllic setting.

Hiking and canyoning

Go on an adventure at the Caravelle, between mangroves and cliffs.

Explore the island’s beautiful tropical gardens and take advantage of the colorful markets to discover local crafts.

Beaches and lagoons

Martinique offers fine sandy beaches and turquoise lagoons at 25-28°C. Swim, sunbathe and enjoy pure happiness.

Martinique is much more than a dream destination for wing foiling enthusiasts. It is a real paradise where you can combine skiing, discovery and relaxation. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced rider, the warm waters, the constant trade winds and the breathtaking landscapes make Martinique a must-see place to practice this unique sport. So, prepare your kite, adjust your foil and let yourself be carried away by the magic of gliding in the heart of the Caribbean!

As with the sun, prolonged exposure to strong winds and sand can accelerate the wear and tear on your wing. This is why, in case of strong winds, the trailing edge of your wing flaps in the wind, which damages it prematurely. In addition, when the sand flies (tramontane conditions in the south of France for example) the sand hits the wing. The sand then acts as a sandpaper on your wing foil or kite surf.
