Popular Wing Foil spots in Sardinia

Sardinia being an island, every corner, every stretch of beach can become a spot for wing foiling. So we are going to tell you about the main spots on the island.

1. The island of Sant'Antioco

The island of Sant’Antioco, located in the southwest of Sardinia, is one of the windiest places in the entire Mediterranean. Thanks to its geographical position, it enjoys Mistral and Scirocco winds almost all year round. It is a strategic place for lovers of water sports such as windsurfing, kitesurfing and wingfoil. There is the center of Sant’Antioco which is located 2 km from the centre of Sant’Antioco and 8 km from Calasetta. It offers courses for beginners and advanced.

The spot offers shallow, flat waters and a constant wind, ideal for learning to wingfoil.

You can easily find typical guest houses that will allow you to live a unique experience between sea, sun and wingfoil.

2. The Straits of Bonifacio

The Strait of Bonifacio, located in southern Corsica and The north of Sardinia, are a very famous wingfoil spot. The wind is very often present in an idyllic setting.

Ideal conditions: The westerly wind rushing into the Strait of Bonifacio creates exceptional sailing conditions for the wingfoil. The shallow waters and white sandy beaches make it a perfect place to practice Wing foiling.

The easiest way to learn wing foiling, take a boat cruise on a catamaran and discover the multitude of islands and beaches on a Wing with Foil cruise explores Cruising for example.

3. Punta Trettu

Punta Trettu, located in the southwestern part of Sardinia, overlooks the lagoon of the Gulf of Palmas. This region is renowned for its windy and sunny climate throughout the year. Historically, it has always been a place of fishing activities. However, in the last ten years, it has become famous for wing foiling, a revolutionary discipline halfway between windsurfing and kitesurfing. Wing foiling redefines gravity with its infinite glides, allowing riders to navigate in very light wind scenarios. The essence of the sport lies in a sail attached to the wrist, without bars or lines, and in a board equipped with a large fin (foil). In Punta Trettu, thanks to its constant and tense winds, you will have the opportunity to learn wing foiling in complete safety, with materials specially designed to facilitate learning

4. Port Boot

Porto Botte, located between the municipalities of San Giovanni Sergiu and Giba, in the southwestern region of Sardinia. This site offers two distinct kite spots:

Il Fortino: Continuing to the right once you reach the sea, you will discover this spot where the water is flat and deep. A local kite school runs this place, offering a well-equipped kite center and an efficient rescue service when needed.

The other side of Porto Botte: Continuing to the left, you will reach the other part of Porto Botte. Here, the water is a little rougher and shallow, with a launching lane.

The kite spot of Porto Botte is very popular for its characteristics of flat water and strong wind, which makes it an excellent place to learn kitesurfing and improve your freestyle. The two spots inside the bay can safely accommodate a large number of kiters.

The wind blows throughout the year, increasing in intensity thanks to the thermal wind (from May to October) and the Venturi effect produced by the morphology of this stretch of coast. In particular, the northwest wind, combined with the sun or little cloudiness, is blowing 5 to 10 knots stronger than expected.

What equipment to bring with you to go Wing Foil in Sardinia?

Here is the wing foil equipment we recommend:

  • The northwest wind (Mistral) that predominates in Sardinia, blows strongly and directly into the Gulf of Palmas more and more intense due to the thermal wind and the “Venturi effect”.
  • The south-easterly wind (Scirocco) coming from the opposite direction, is a bit gusty and sideways.
  • The west wind (Ponente) and the southwest wind (Libeccio) blow well from spring to autumn if the sky is not too cloudy.
  • The north wind (tramontana) often blows strong and cold in the bay throughout the winter season (even at more than 50 knots).

The size of the wings?

The wind in Sardinia can be very strong, we must not forget the small sizes of wing foil wings to sail whatever the conditions. A 5 m2 and 3.4 will allow you to sail whatever the conditions.

The wing foil board?

If you are traveling by plane, an inflatable wing foil board will allow you to easily take it without having the risk of breaking your board during the trip. It will easily fit in the trunk of your car.

The inflatable option is really a good opportunity for family lessons.

Don't forget

Remember to take a good sunscreen with a high UV index because with the wind, sunburn can happen quickly. In Sardinia during the summer period, the water is relatively warm, so theoretically lycra can be enough but with the wind which can be strong, in wing foiling a shorty can be recommended.

Sardinia is renowned for its quality winds, but also for its cultural richness, history and picturesque landscapes! On a windless day (which is rare), or if you don’t enjoy water sports, take the opportunity to explore the city, visit historical sites that trace the history of the island, or enjoy delicious Italian dishes before enjoying the excellent temperatures at the beach.
