Except historically, Downwind has always been held back by two constraints:
- Takeoff. In classic Downwind SUP, you take off by paddle. It's physical, technical, and especially limited: you've got roughly 5 to 7 attempts before you're done. If you miss your start, you pay in energy.
- The logistics of getting back. You go downwind... and end up kilometers away. With no way to get back up, you need a car shuttle, a friend, or long walks. A huge brake on practice.

Why Parawing is the ultimate Downwind tool

Parawing as safety, even for paddle purists
You're doing classic Downwind SUP and you have no intention of letting go of your paddle? Still keep a Parawing on your back. It's real insurance that gets you out of three situations that can quickly go wrong:
- You break your paddle: you deploy the wing and come back in.
- You no longer have the strength to leave by paddle again: that's exactly the wall of 5 to 7 attempts. The Parawing gets you to take off again effortlessly.

A Downwind session with Parawing, step by step
- Rigging: you deploy the FYNIX in seconds, lines untangled, harness clipped if you're sailing.
- Takeoff and upwind climb: you take off on the Foil and fly upwind to position yourself at the top of your run before launching your Downwind.
- Launching the Downwind: you choose your bump, launch into it and stow your wing.
- Riding the bumps: hands-free, you chain the waves and let yourself be carried, in pure Downwind.
- Redeploy: when you finish your run or want to head back up, you bring the wing out again.

Standard Parawing Downwind: the constraint of two wings
To really measure the benefit of the PushBar System®, you need to see what happens without it. On a standard Parawing, without power control, the usable wind range by size remains narrow. Once airborne, the power is fixed: too much wind, you suffer; not enough, you sink.
The consequence is very concrete in Downwind. Most of the time, you leave with two wings. One in your backpack in case the wind picks up or drops during your run, and another for sailing. You carry more gear, you sometimes have to change wings in the middle of the water, and you're never sure you have the right surface at the right time. The role of the PushBar System® in Downwind
The PushBar System® (PBS) is the technology developed by SROKA (registered trademark, patent pending) that equips the FYNIX: a variable-geometry bar that lets you modulate power in real time: you push to Depower, you pull to re-engage. In Downwind, that changes two key moments.

What gear you need to start Downwind with Parawing
Wind: minimum 15 knots to get started
Below 15 knots, it's tough: you don't have enough energy to make usable bumps and keep the Foil airborne between waves. To start, aim for at least 15 knots: you'll have enough wind-formed swell to stay on the swell train.
And beautiful swell without wind doesn't replace wind
That's the most common reasoning error: thinking that beautiful swell alone is enough for Downwind. A ground swell, born from a distant storm and arriving windless on the spot, is too fast and too far apart to be chained. You don't catch the next bump, you drop between two waves, and the session ends short.
What you surf in Downwind is wind-formed swell: short bumps, close together, made right there by the wind blowing as you sail. That's why wind isn't just what makes you take off: it's what builds your playground. No wind, no usable bumps, no Downwind, no matter how big the swell on the horizon.
The board: a board that takes off early
At first, you want a board that glides and launches easily: Downwind-style, long and narrow, with enough volume to get past takeoff without hassle. The Foil: the UHA range, the right all-rounder
For Downwind, the right compromise is a Foil from the UHA range with aspect ratio 11: it's a real all-rounder, versatile and forgiving, that makes you fly easily while keeping glide and speed to follow swell trains. To start, go with a high-lift wing (typically a 1100, 1260 or 1550 UHA) that takes off early. As you progress and the wind picks up, you reduce your Foil size to gain speed and responsiveness.
Parawing size: 4 m for 15 to 20 knots
The right size depends on several factors: wind strength, your weight, your Foil size and your board size. The rule: the smaller the wing, the easier it is to repack, but the more wind you need. To start Downwind in 15 to 20 knots, a 4 m FYNIX is an excellent choice. As you pick up wind and level, you go smaller.

Our tips for successful first Downwind runs
Choose a spot where the wind has been blowing from far away
Look for a place where the wind has been blowing from a long distance (long fetch). The longer the fetch, the more powerful and fast the bumps, and the longer you stay on the swell train without having to Pump. That's the secret to Downwind that glides on its own. First learn to pack and repack
The real move to master at first isn't speed: it's packing and storing the wing while sailing. And that takes repetition. No need to aim for long Downwinds right away. Instead do small 200 m Downwinds: you deploy, you stow, you redeploy, again and again. That's how you understand the move and build experience. Once packing is automatic, you gradually extend.
The right gear to learn with, then evolve
At first: a board that glides and a Foil that lifts, to make takeoff and staying airborne easier. Later on, you reduce volumes and surfaces to gain maneuverability and responsiveness as your level improves.
Safety first
Board leash is essential. Choose a spot where you can get back even if the wind dies, sail with a buddy when you're starting out, and don't overestimate your conditions. Mistakes to avoid when you're starting out
Most beginner headaches come from a few classic mistakes. Knowing them keeps you from making them.
- Launch under-powered. With a wing that's too small or not enough wind, you can't take off or stay airborne between bumps. Better to have a surface that lifts well at first.
- Choose a bad spot. Without fetch, the bumps are soft and you stop all the time. Go for a water surface where the wind has been blowing from far away.
- Count on swell instead of wind. A ground swell without wind is too fast and too far apart to be chained. It's the bumps formed by the wind of the moment that make Downwind.
- Want to go too far too soon. Before you master packing, stick to small 200 m runs. You'll progress much faster than exhausting yourself on a long failed Downwind.
- Head downwind before heading back up. Prefer a start from your arrival point: do your upwind return first, while you have wind and energy, then head back down. If conditions weaken, heading downwind will always be easier than heading back up.
- Neglect safety. Systematic leash, and never overestimate your conditions. If you're going solo, bring a buoyancy vest, a phone, a VHF, a mirror and a tow line if you're going far. Check with the maritime authorities and verify the weather well before you go.
