Montpellier and its surroundings are packed with superb wing foil spots. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced rider, you will find the wing foil spot that suits you. Wing foil has been growing fast over the past few years. It has even become a must-have among water sports! One of the big advantages of wing foil is its ease of use. Unlike kitesurfing or windfoiling, wing foil is extremely simple to set up on the beach, to get into the water and to transport. It is a sport accessible to all levels that does not require strong wind or waves. In fact, you can ride in light wind, and you can get up on foil from 7-8 knots. So, in addition to making the most of light wind conditions, wing foil gives you a wide choice of spots and opportunities to practice.
We have selected for you the 8 best wing foil spots around Montpellier.

The 8 best wing foil spots near Montpellier
L'Espiguette beach
L'Espiguette beach is without a doubt one of the best wing foil spots around Montpellier. Located just south of Port Camargue, L'Espiguette beach stretches over no less than 10 km. With its long expanse of fine sand, it is undeniably one of the most beautiful beaches in the region. It suits beginners as well as experienced riders. The wind is fairly steady. It usually blows from the South, South-West and North-West. There may be some sandbanks further offshore, so make sure there is always enough water for your foil.
Like most beaches in the south of France, L'Espiguette beach is very busy in summer. It can sometimes be hard to find a spot. The advantage is that you do not need much space to set up your wing foil gear.
Port Camargue: South Beach
South Beach is surely the best wing foil spot around Montpellier in tramontane wind (North-West wind). It is also a very well-known spot for kitesurfers. Wind conditions are ideal all year round, which makes it a highly sought-after playground. You are better off being at an intermediate or advanced level to ride here. There are sometimes many people in the water, but it lets intermediate and expert foilers really have fun!
The beach is fairly easy to reach thanks to the car park nearby.
Good to know: in summer, swimming zones are set up and the car park becomes paid (from June to September).
Located 15 minutes from Montpellier, Le Boucanet is one of the best wing foil spots in the area. It is an excellent spot in West wind. It is also possible to foil in South wind. Depending on conditions, the Le Boucanet spot can have some waves. Plenty to have fun with in free surf or surf foil. Front wings such as the 1350 High Aspect Lift are perfect for surf foil or wing foil in light conditions, ideal for the small waves of summer with little substance. The bonus? The length of the beach is perfect for downwind riding!
One caution, though, if you want to ride in peace. Le Boucanet is a very touristy beach that attracts many holidaymakers in summer.
Grand Travers beach
Grand Travers beach in La Grande-Motte is the ideal spot to get started with wing foil around Montpellier. The favourable winds on this beach are South, South-East and South-West winds. In South-East wind the beach even turns into a superb wave spot, great for having fun in surf foil! In summer, swimming zones are set up to separate swimmers from foilers and kitesurfers. It is quite handy for learning wing foil in peace.
Carnon beaches
The Carnon beaches near Montpellier are very good wing foil spots when conditions allow. The favourable winds for foiling there are South and South-West winds. The winds can still sometimes be very irregular. These spots suit beginner foilers as well as experienced ones when conditions get bigger. The Carnon beaches are easy to reach, with plenty of car parks nearby. Some beaches are off-limits to kitesurfing in summer, such as the Roquilles spot. We therefore advise you to check the wing foil riding conditions with locals before heading there.
Villeneuve-les-Maguelone
The Villeneuve-les-Maguelone spot is one of the most beautiful wing foil and kitesurfing spots in Montpellier. The beach stretches for about 8 km and you can ride there in virtually any wind conditions. The most frequent directions are South-West and North-West winds. Be careful in offshore wind: stay alert and do not ride alone. At this spot, it is best to know how to upwind in order to foil safely. Access is somewhat less easy than for the previous spots. There are two options. You can park in the car park (paid from May to September) and walk the rest of the way. It is about a 15-minute walk. Alternatively, a little train runs in summer to take you to the different beaches.
Étang du Ponant
The advantage of a lagoon is that you can ride in almost any wind conditions. The best directions are South-East, South-West and North-West winds. North winds are not ideal for this lagoon. It is the perfect spot to start wing foil around Montpellier. Intermediate and expert riders will also find what they are looking for depending on conditions. It is the meeting point for many foilers! There are many Facebook groups where you can find out about spots and exchange with other wing foil enthusiasts in the Montpellier region.
Étang d'Ingril
Warning: sailing on the Étang d'Ingril is currently forbidden, except for schools. This ban follows a conflict of use with fishermen. The order is being contested, so the situation may change. Before this ban, the practice was already regulated by limits on the navigation area and by time restrictions to respect. Check the regulations in force before you go, or go through a school to ride on the body of water.
Located 15 minutes from Montpellier, the Étang d'Ingril is the ultimate learning spot. Indeed, the body of water is shallow, enclosed and has little chop, so all the conditions are in place to learn wing foil safely. The prevailing wind is North-West (tramontane), but since it is a lagoon you can very well ride in West, North-East, East and South-West winds. It is even possible to go there in South-East wind, but stay alert because in these conditions the wind pushes toward the far end of the lagoon. As the water level rises at the far end of the lagoon, you quickly lose your footing, so you need to know how to upwind if you choose to foil in South-East wind.
Still, pay attention to the water depth. After a few days of tramontane, the water level drops and the foil risks hitting the bottom (algae and mud). That is why, for this spot, we advise you to equip yourself with a mast of 65 cm or 80 cm at most.
