Martinique, the paradise for wing foil?

Martinique, a French island in the Caribbean, is a true tropical gem. Nestled in the heart of the Lesser Antilles, it offers a paradisiacal setting with its fine sand beaches, crystal-clear waters and lush vegetation. But beyond its idyllic landscapes, Martinique is also a prime playground for water sports enthusiasts. Among them, wing foil stands out.

This discipline combines the glide of surfing, the power of kitesurfing and the lightness of foiling. Picture yourself flying above the water, propelled by the wind, in an enchanting setting. Martinique, with its suitable spots and tropical climate, is the perfect place to learn or improve in this unique discipline.

The best Wing Foil spots in Martinique

    1. Le Vauclin

Le Vauclin is an excellent spot for wing foiling in Martinique. It offers warm waters and a steady trade wind, ideal for learning and progressing. The Faula point spot is particularly suitable. You will find a flat, sandy bottom and a wide body of water accessible to all levels. UCPA offers a one-week course at Le Vauclin, with 10 wing foil sessions supervised by an instructor. It is an ideal opportunity for people who already have experience in water sports. For a meal, I recommend Chez Henri, located on Route des Salines, where you can enjoy delicious French and Caribbean cuisine.

    2. L’Anse Michel

L’Anse Michel is another popular spot for wing foiling in Martinique. Its wind is rather onshore, which makes sailing comfortable. For a meal, Le Cocotier is a recommended restaurant, offering a magnificent view of the beach.

    3. Sainte-Anne (La Baie des Anglais):

Sainte-Anne offers several varied spots for wing foiling. L’Anse du Belley is suited to strong trade winds. You can also explore Les Trois-Îlets on the west coast. Watch out for obstacles at sea. For a meal, Chez Nadiege et Serge is a restaurant appreciated for its local dishes and friendly atmosphere.

    4. Le Cap Chevalier:

For Le Cap Chevalier, I did not find a specific wing foil school, but you can explore the other spots mentioned above. For a meal, try Le Beach Resto Des Salines or Le Panier à Salade in Sainte-Anne, which are close to Le Cap Chevalier.

    Martinique's specifics for Wing Foil

Martinique benefits from the trade wind, which blows from the northeast. This trade wind is steady and gentle, offering ideal conditions for wing foiling in complete safety.

The trade wind season runs from December to July. It is the best season for wing foiling in Martinique. Air and sea temperatures are pleasant, reaching around 27°C during the windy period (from December to April).

The best-known spots are located on the south Atlantic coast, between Le Vauclin and Anse Michel, as well as at Sainte-Anne. The wind is side-onshore, which makes sailing comfortable. The body of water is generally flat to choppy. Sailing in a swimsuit in a paradisiacal lagoon is simply an exceptional memory.

From beginner to expert, Martinique will be a perfect destination for wing foiling

There is something for every level, from beginner to expert: you will find a sport that matches your level and needs. In some lagoons you can touch the bottom very far out, which reassures you and lets you rest if needed, in complete safety.

There are various wing foil schools in Martinique. You will find state-certified instructor diplomas that will help you start and progress in wing foiling.

Remember to bring your wing foil package before you leave. If needed, the schools can provide the equipment.

What to do if the conditions are not there?

If there is no wind, you can discover the treasures of Martinique. It is one of the jewels of the French Antilles. It offers a paradisiacal setting for wing foil enthusiasts. Beyond water sports, the island is full of activities to discover. Here is what you can do besides wing foiling:

    4×4 excursions

Explore the north of the island through sugarcane fields and discover banana cultivation. Your guide will reveal the secrets of the "sweet stick". Don't miss a visit to a banana plantation in Saint-Joseph.

Visit the La Mauny distillery in Rivière-Pilote

In the south, visit the La Mauny distillery in Rivière-Pilote to learn the steps of rum production. After a Creole lunch or lobster by the sea in Sainte-Anne, relax on the Îlet Chevalier, accessible by traditional boat.

    Boat trips

Discover Le François by boat, explore the white-sand seabeds and watch dolphins and turtles.

Opt for a crossing to Îlet Chevalier, where you can swim and relax in an idyllic setting.

    Hiking and canyoning

Set off on an adventure at La Caravelle, between mangroves and cliffs.

Explore the island's magnificent tropical gardens and enjoy the colorful markets to discover local crafts.

    Beaches and lagoons

Martinique offers fine sand beaches and turquoise lagoons at 25-28°C. Swim, sunbathe and enjoy pure bliss.

Martinique is much more than a dream destination for wing foil enthusiasts. It is a true paradise where you can combine gliding, discovery and relaxation. Whether you are a beginner or experienced, the warm waters, steady trade winds and breathtaking landscapes make Martinique an unmissable place to practice this unique sport. So, get your wing ready, adjust your foil and let yourself be carried away by the magic of gliding in the heart of the Caribbean!

Just like the sun, prolonged exposure to strong winds and sand can accelerate the wear of your wing. That is why, in strong winds, when the trailing edge of your wing flaps in the wind, it damages it prematurely. Moreover, when sand is blowing (tramontane conditions in the south of France, for example), the sand hits the wing. Sand then acts like sandpaper on your wing foil or kitesurfing wing.
